The greatest story ever told about one’s self is one of pure transparency and honesty. I can say that in my twenty-four years of living, I could never have foreseen experiences and obstacles I would have had to overcome. Summer of 1998, I traveled for the first time on a plane to the United States. My fathers side of the family had already left the country years prior to get settled and get affairs in order for us who were still back in Haiti. Bright eyed, six year-old from Haiti, I had no idea the plans God had in store for me.…

Having a growth mindset emphasizes the understanding that abilities and characteristics can be developed. Notably, people with this mindset typically are able to utilize the obstacles they come across in life as a way to grow. A fixed mindset, on the other hand, represents a belief that people have to prove their intelligence, athleticism, and other skill sets. These people dislike the idea of challenge and accept their abilities as unable to be developed.…

In the span of 19 years, it was a very dragging battle for me, but all of these events helped me up to this moment in my life. They gave me my current mind set on life, my plan to go where I want in life and those I want to help. Looking back into my past has made me think about the exciting and difficult moments I had in my life with my family. There was not one dull moment even though life was rough growing up. Growing up financially was inconvenient, even though my mother did not have to deal with racial problems at work similar to the racial segregation the immigrants dealt with in the readings we were assigned in class. However, if my mother did deal with racial segregation for work, we would definitely be on the streets. Through the years, I ran into several unusual events that I would never have expected to happen.…

Growing up in a family with a father as a physician, I always seemed to be asked the same question: “So, are you going to become a doctor like your dad someday?”, and ironically for the first 18 years of my life, that was the last idea I had in mind. At an early age, I began to develop an acute interest in mathematics and science. These classes seemed to come very naturally to me, which further increased my interest over time. As I grew older, it came more and more vividly clear that learning about medicine and science had become my passion. Throughout my life I have taken up many obstacles and challenges that required diligence, patience, and hard work to be overcome.…

Over the course of my life I have come across many obstacles physically, mentally, and spiritually. From the deaths of loved ones and good people I have had the honor to call friends, all the way down to the mud pits and physical hells of being a Marine, the trials and tribulations of my life are many. Sometimes it can be brought to point that I brought this all upon myself, and for the most part this is true. All of the decisions I have made have brought me to where I am at this point, submitting an essay in hopes of finally getting into a field where I will never work another day of my life. But I digress, while that is not the attitude of this essay it falls into part of the most challenging obstacle I have had to face.…

To describe my life, I would have to bring up a thousand times the same word: Challenges. Each one of us faces them in our own different contexts, even if we are the causers of these as consequences or not. In my case, things started to get rough by the time I attended middle school. I was the 3rd born of a mid-class family, our livelihood was decently good, until we coped with a financial crisis. It was a difficult time and I struggled to remain poised, because of course, being tight on money was problematic, but the entire atmosphere in my home was tense and somber.…
