One of the most important, if not the most important characteristics of a leader is the ability to communicate well. Without this ability even the most brilliant mind cannot be a leader, because they will never be able to inspire their team to work towards a common goal. Transformation leaders have strong commutation skills and are able to positively influence team outcomes (Boies, Fiset & Gill, 2015). In today’s fast pace world leaders have a variety of ways to communicate. A strong leader should be able to use many modes of communication. However, being able to use many mode of communication is not enough. In order for a leader to properly communicate they must consider what they are trying to say and who they are trying to say it to. …show more content…
The best leaders are the ones who can wield a variety of strategies. In doing so a leader can become multi-dimensional and successful motivate and lead their team in solving complex problems. Leaders who only use one style of communication will quickly become stagnant and ineffective. In the same way a leader who consistently relies on only one mode of communication will not be able to properly express their point of view and their voice. Anytime that a leader is communicating with their team they must decide how what is the ultimate goal of what they are trying to communicate. They must communicate in a way that is not only efficient, but is also effective. Far too often leaders will try to only be efficient or effective with their communication. A strong leader will find the mode and style of communication that is both. Face to face communication is generally more effective because nothing can be lost in the text. Their message is taken at face value. This being said face to face communication is not always efficient. A leader must use face to face communication only when it is necessary. For less personal messages a leader can use email, text, instant message, memos, and a variety of other modes. Along with choosing a mode of communication they must also choose an appropriate style of communication. They must lay out a vision and realistic goals for the team and do in an efficient and effective many. They must not be one dimensional or their reach will be drastically diminished. In the case of Ben Williams, he was failing to be a leader because he lacks the proper communication skills. If he addresses this, he should see results from his team. He needs to explain his vision for the team and set up goals for them. If he does this is team will be able to complete tasks and see that projects are completed in a timely
