Back when this book was written parents who had deaf children were encouraged for their children to speak. Now parents of deaf children are encouraged to have their children learn ASL. Its inspiring that people who are deaf or hard of hearing now have most of the tools to communicate with others who know the language. I believe that ASL is becoming more common because people are now becoming more aware and conscious of all the people do not have the ability to communicate orally. For example I nanny for a 1 year old and both of her parents encourage her to learn sign language.…
Audiences were able to witness several meetings between Sean’s teachers, administration, and parents where all parties successfully discussed Sean’s condition and needs. Once teachers began to look past Sean’s disability and develop flexible teaching styles, they were able to create systems that aided the progressing minds of not only Sean, but his classmates as well. During end of the year meetings and interviews, Sean’s teachers explained how they were able to adapt instruction and class activities to work for all of their students. They were also able to communicate with Sean’s parents in calm and clear ways through both vocal and visual cues. In turn, Sean’s parents realized the teachers wanted what was best for him, they were simply unsure of how to provide it.…

Instead of jumping to the thought of special educational services to help the student communicate and become involved, the teacher uses her already-in-motion classroom techniques of student storytellers and positive correction to help Jason feel comfortable interacting with his fellow students. As the book goes on, we can see multiple students as storytellers and see how their stories develop both negative and positive perspectives of Jason and his disability based on Jason’s response to his classmates. We are able to see how the class’ stories change their viewpoints of Jason as he comes more and more involved and successfully integrated within the…
You need to teach children ASL at a young age besides ignoring it and try to force them to live in the mainstream world. Parents don’t understand by not teaching them a language at an early age, they won’t be as successful when they grow up. Being deaf as a child, you won’t learn ASL if someone doesn’t teach you and you’ll have a hard time learning English because you can’t comprehend what everyone is saying all the time. You are doing more harm to the child instead of a positive. The children now think they are not good enough to do anything and they start to doubt they self instead of seeing their full potential.…

In reading the case study, “Is This Child Mislabeled,” there is a lot of great information on children with disabilities. In the case study there is a boy named Sergio, who is a third grader from Serbia, where he is now a student at Oakwood Elementary. He has been diagnosed as having a learning disability due to the fact that he tested poorly on the assessments that his new school required. In reading the article, and some very great points for The Iris Center Star Sheet, I believe, that Sergio has, in fact, been mislabeled as having a learning disability; however, with the help of Mrs. Evans, his new resource teacher, he is getting the help that is truly needed. To begin, Sergio was not assessed adequately.…
A Deaf Event I took an American Sign Language class last semester, Fall2014 at San Bernardino Valley College. The teacher had us choose an event to attend for a quiz grade.
