Does anyone really know what it is like to be the hunted instead of the hunter? In the action packed thriller “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell, the main character Rainsford, a professional hunter, finds himself stranded on an island with a psychopathic hunter named General Zaroff. Zaroff has hunted all over the world looking for more and more difficult prey until eventually, he was far too experienced to the point that no animals could ever compete with him. To quench his thirst for hunting, he needed a being with higher intelligence, the highest intelligence...humans. This sparks the inciting moment, making the world renowned hunter an ant for Zaroff to squash in his hunting game. As soon as Rainsford catches sight of this house, it is described as “The mansion looms above him like something out of a Gothic novel…” (“The Most” 156). This describes the unsettling, creepy nature of Zaroff and the areas around him he infest. Later Zaroff describes the twisted and tangled jungle that he chose as the perfect habitat.
