When people think heavily about the future they begin to fear their own limits and they are more likely to resort to violence. The alternative to violence, which both Breuggemann and Yoder advocate for, requires people to face their fears about the uncertainty of the future. In Walter Brueggemann’s book, The Prophetic Imagination, Brueggemann included the Biblical story of Moses to offer historical perspective as well as illustrate one of the first acts of the alternative community. The pharaoh’s Egyptian empire was oppressive by nature but through the Exodus, Moses was able to lead his people out of oppression and into freedom.…

There are many differences between the Exodus described in the Bible and the Exodus shown in the 2007 film The Ten Commandments. From how Moses found out that he was a Hebrew to the one responsible of making the Golden Calf, the stories within the movie accommodate to its audience; the children. In addition to the difference in names for the LORD, the film focuses on portraying Moses and Aaron as exceptional men in the eyes of God, while the Bible has a more bitter, realistic feeling to it. The contrasts between the two stories cause a great effect upon the intended audience that could affect the later generations’ knowledge of Biblical stories. Before continuing, I would like to give some honorable mentions; the Ten Commandments and the Ten…

In his newfound social standing, he employs many workers and helps their families financially, which inflates his view of himself as a caring uncle. Later, he tries to wed a young lady named Masha, who loves another man named Charlie. Of all the great events in Moses’ life, there is one time period that is probably the most important—his time in Midian. Moses had grown up in the palaces of Egypt from a young age. He knew what it was to have much, and it was probably an extremely good life. Egypt was never known for being the poorest among nations in history, so it stands to reason that Moses, who was adopted into the royal family, had much. However, one simple act brought about a huge change in Moses’ life.…

The 1930 Yiddish film, “Uncle Moses,” written by Sholem Asch and Maurice Schwartz portrays a story of Uncle Moses, a wealthy, powerful sweatshop owner who falls in love with Masha, an employee’s teenage daughter. The film greatly portrays a rich, oblivious man who struggles to find and receive love due to his narcissistic nature. In both the readings and film, it is easily perceived that Masha has a negative attitude towards Uncle Moses and is clearly marrying him out of financial and social obligations. Also, both readings and film portray the exploitive, manipulative, and narcissistic womanizer who conducts affairs with multiple women and lords his wealth and power over the people in the Lower East Side. To begin with, an example of a scene that portrays Uncle Moses as a womanizer in the beginning of the film where he is approached by a woman who sits next to him while he’s eating and tries to flirt with with him, even though her husband is clearly watching.…

In DreamWorks’ 1998 animated film, The Prince of Egypt, viewers are introduced to Moses, a young man filled with life, vibrancy, and mischief. His life was preordained by God to lead his people - the Israelites - out of captivity and into the Promised Land. This modern Midrash not only revitalizes the story of Moses, but changes its original purpose. By comparing and contrasting the DreamWorks version of Moses’ youth and exit from Egypt to Midian to that of the biblical story and scholarly commentary, it is revealed that the purpose of The Prince of Egypt is to emphasize social change and justice.…
