The poem “Mortal Man” by Kendrick Lamar is not known to be “your average poem”. Although “just a poem”, it is a free verse poem written inside of a song also called “Mortal Man” by Kendrick Lamar which makes it really distinct and sui generis. Within the poem, Kendrick basically describes inner conflicts within himself that he seems to have no control over. He begins to question his life as well as who he really is and what exactly he is truly here for. The title becomes most significant at the end of the poem where he has seemed to have given up and refers to himself as “just another nigga” rather than a “mortal man”. Considered by many to be the, “Most talented Rapper of his Generation,” Kendrick Lamar has become extremely influential and popular since the release of his hit album Good Kid, M.A.A.D City (Stone). It is this great influence around which his second and most recent album, To Pimp A Butterfly, is based. Throughout the album Lamar struggles in dealing with his wealth and influence: each song is a slow progression from an abusive, wealthy consumer to a wiser man who understands the good he can do with his power and influence. At the beginning of his album, Lamar blatantly abuses his power: he is a carless, all consuming “caterpillar” (Mortal Man).…

Poetry is an unusual way of telling a story. It can be used to express feeling or some type of moral or lesson. “Hazel tells Laverne”, by Katharyn Machan tells a unique story filled with nonfiction and fun. To combat this story Edwin Arlington Robinson wrote a more serious story based off of a man living in his town. My interpretation of what poetry is most likely the same as what anyone else it is thinking; whatever the poet at the time wants it to be. Poetry is open to anything. It can express anger, happiness, hatred, fear, love, passion, joy and any other form of expressions known to man. Before this assignment I was not big on poetry outside of when it was required to read in school. I decided on the poem “To Change the World Enough” by Alice Walker, mainly because I was able to understand most of what the poem was saying.…
