An activity system is a structured organization that helps describe how people do work together. According to Kain and Wardle’s text in Writing About Writing, the activity system is made up of a subject, a community, rules within it, a division of labor, motives, and tools used by the subject. At the agency, the subject is the employee. The community is made up of strategists, designers, content creators, project managers, web developers, the CEO, the VP of design, the account director, and the administrative assistants; similarly the division of labor looks like this: the CEO, the VP of design, the account director, project managers, content creators, strategists, designers, web developers, and the administrative assistants. The set of rules indicates that you should be on time, be creative, report to those above you, be organized, communicate, and work hard with an efficient attitude. As a new web developer, we ask that you are comfortable with writing programming languages, server information, and search engine optimization; the programming tools that make our website come up when someone searches our company. As a content creator, writing plays a big role in making copywriting requirements as well as creating brand messages, ad headlines, and product sheets. The project managers have the responsibility of writing and reporting to the clients; writing proposals, project status reports, directions for next steps, and even statements of work. A statement of work is a vital document within the company. It outlines the proposal of our work, the contract, and the job description and client expectation. Although you will not start at the position of being a project manager, working hard and developing great writing habits will ensure that you have an opportunity to move into this role later in your career.
