Excursion Assignment Over time the city of Toronto has constantly expanding and redeveloping. The result of redevelopment and expansion is change is change is styles of architecture. This can be seen in the location of houses in Toronto, and in a smaller community such as the Ryerson campus.…
As time progresses, the pressure of population growth and climate abnormalities expand, causing a burden to humanity. As a result, institutions research new methods of sustaining networks of resources. One phenomenal method of sustainability includes maintaining and creating excellent infrastructure. For example, in developing countries, nuclear power plants and factories flourish, creating the demand for skyscrapers. However, smaller communities also desire new systematic approaches for sustainability.…
The Frank Lloyd Wright’s Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum is an example of organic architecture. In the book it says “ Its rounded form encloses a ramp that spirals around an empty center that is 90 feet wide. Certainly, the museum creates a striking visual image” (Lazzari 417). The Museum does look very awesome because of how it is spiral shaped and the color of the building is just white which is a plain color. The Frank Gehry’s Walt Disney Concert Hall looks much more exciting to look at because of how the building has a unique look and sweet stainless steel look.…
Unfamiliar Nature David Ruy's practice explores the contemporary design problems at the intersection of architecture, nature, and technology. In this essay ‘Returning to (Strange) Object,’ Ruy talks about his position towards nature as an architect. The essay advocates for the diminishing role of the architect and also that the architects desire to establish its roots outside its scope is leading to irreversible self-inflicting damage to its authority. To do so, the author first presents our current notion of the nature as the ultimate milieu. For the architect, nature has always been an inspiration and also a force that challenges its limitation.…
The sponge concept is used to have openings for outdoor use and entrances as well as separating the building into “houses”. The openings also allow natural light to come in through more windows and air to be…

Based on Catherine Mohr, a roboticist, the means to create a sustainable world in within the building hands of our engineers. She gave an example of a house that she built with her husband which costed less energy compared to a typical building techniques. Different materials that used saved the house a lot of energy compared to a typical house. For example of using aluminum windows, they choose to use wood. Instead of using spray foam as insulator, they used sprayed-in cellulose, which is a much less energy consumption rate.…
Innovating Building material Solar –thermal cladding (solar activated façade) The innovating building material I am going to write about is The Solar –thermal cladding . This type of cladding is the new type of cladding whereby solar panels are added to the cladding to form a more efficient and sustainable materials for all sorts of buildings. ( Eco building pulse, 2016) This is a new style where by the solar panels are hidden and are covered by materials such as wood , at this moment in time this kind of technology is building done and placed onto building in the USA. , however it has been available in Switzerland for some time .…
Mohammed Waseem Chiraagh 1380983 ARCH 6313 - Critical Studies 3 Major Assignment Traditionally as humans, when critiquing a building our thoughts are based on the buildings form as a whole, one defined object or boundary made up of different components which creates the overall look, structure and how it fits into the contextual surroundings. In the text “Why Architecture Matters” Paul Goldberger, shows that not only the outer boundary or façade is important but that there is another dimension which is often open to wider interpretation and often disregarded when thinking about a building. This being the interior space within these boundaries, the interior of the building says a lot more than its exterior, as it defines the space, the light and the mood it creates.…
In architecture and civil engineering, sustainability plays a main role. All buildings and any construction could be potentially dangerous if they were built or designed in an inappropriate way. All structures and designs have to be safe and stable to prevent the fatal catastrophe of failing construction. The construction of any large objects, such as shopping centers, cathedrals, bridges, and other usually takes a lot of time.…
Additionally, tectonics and material expression are both still very important and relevant in modern day architecture, and there are many buildings that show this. The houses similarly share the concept of being of “skin and bones” design. They are both constructed of steel and glass materials, and…
Ecological design is a major part of our coming future and is necessary for the prosperity of our species as caretakers for the world. Sim Van Der Ryn and Stuart Cowan, in their book Ecological Design, address five principles in design that will help to move society in the right direction. These principles are: solutions from your place, ecological accounting, designing with nature, everyone is a designer, and making nature visible. It has been over the course of the last century that building designers and engineers have neglected the entirety of environmental impacts that went into their buildings. They have built, I believe, from a strictly human perspective with regard only to what the majority wants.…
Green space is part of a development in establishing grass, trees and vegetation in a community. Green spaces contain natural elements that could be placed and designed in an urban expansion. The establishment of parks and green landscapes restore an individual’s mental and physical health. In addition, the price of homes increase because of the eye-catching views that green space has to offer. The trees and vegetation efficiently create shades that will reduce the heat island effect, and can potentially clear and improve the atmosphere.…
