According to Guerin, based on the statistics of the International Organization for Migration, “more than 3,000 have drowned in the Mediterranean this year” (Guerin). Ultimately, the reason why these migrants are drowning is because the traffickers, who drop the migrants to Europe, dump the migrants in the sea near the borders of a European country and abandon them (Guerin). This emphasizes that the EU is not patrolling the Mediterranean Sea to the extent that is sufficient to rescue all the migrants from perishing. Instead, they monitor their waters for the sole purpose of protecting their borders. It is simply monitoring the Italian waters (Squires). This ineffective surveillance of the entire Mediterranean results in lack of security for the migrants. Frontex, the EU border agency, “has expanded its patrol of the Mediterranean, under pressure to turn away more boats of would-be migrants” (Pizzi). This exhibits how the EU lacks sympathy towards these migrants who risk everything to reach its borders. Although it is not stopping migrants from crossing its borders, the EU surely does not want more migrants entering Europe. The fact that the EU purposefully limited its border policy in a time where extreme refuge is required shows that it is very Europe-centric. Even though it may lead to an overpopulated Europe, it is most likely temporary. Hence, the EU disregards its social responsibility of providing asylum for those near its borders that require it.
