Morning In The Burned House By Margaret Atwood

The second poem, Morning in the Burned House, is also narrated by a deceased individual who seems to be very accepting of their death and at peace with it as well. The tone of the poem is calm and reminiscent. The narrator describes a house which was presumably occupied and also describes familiar objects from around the house. The author breaks the illusion that the house and its occupants are existent and towards the ending it is revealed that the narrator has died in the house fire. This is hinted through words such as “holding my cindery, non-existent radiant flesh”. The two texts are very similar in the way that both demonstrate the theme of illusion vs. reality. For example, in the first poem, Atwood describes the beautiful scenery
