Joseph Smith played a pivotal role in the Mormon faith as its founder. His upbringing greatly influenced his achievements during the 1830s and 1840s. The Second Great Awakening, a religious revival movement during the early 19th century in the United States, also influenced Smith, in turn, compelling him to believe he was needed for significant religious duties. Joseph Smith’s Church of Christ had many beliefs outside the norm and practiced many ideas that were not considered acceptable by conventional society. This is why Mormons were highly disliked by non-Mormons and was the very reason this situation affected the development of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.…

I had been pondering this question for a while “how will my parents react when I tell them that I have decided to join the LDS church? The worst part of it all is that I didn’t ask permission to start speaking with the missionaries in the first place.” I was literally weighed down by fear as I crossed the threshold of my parent’s front door that evening. “I made this decision and I am willing to deal with the consequences,” I thought to myself. Somehow the brightly colored walls of the living room seemed dull.…

Jealousy is just another part of everyday life. As shown in Bobbie Ann Mason 's "Being Country", the story just shows that it 's normal to be envious of others and just look at positive things in their lives while ignoring the negative things. For example, when Mason 's family was having dinner, instead of looking at it like a feast because of the plentiful food her family had. Mason looked at it as "fuel for work". Instead of always looking at the positive side, we as humans like to generate an unreasonable conclusion from what 's bad in our lives to what 's good in someone else 's.…

The World’s Parliament was a contradictory event. Asian delegates, or “Orientals” defined as “followers of Brahma and Buddha and Mohammed” (62), at the Parliament were given a warm welcome and were even referred to as “The most gorgeous group [of] delegates” (64) at the fair. However, just seven years prior, The Chinese Exclusion Act was enacted, prohibiting all immigration of Chinese laborers to the United States, making it one of the most significant restrictions of free immigration in US history. One reason for this overjoyed reaction at the fair towards a population that was being treated with such animosity in the country elsewhere, would be because the “Oriental” delegates at the fair were set to return to their Native Countries while…

I think that something a lot of ex-Mormons struggle with is realizing that yes, the LDS church can do some good. No organization is entirely good or entirely bad. And while I'm not going to be running to rejoin the church, its welfare model - which is community oriented and offers a strong sense of accountability - is worth looking at. Beyond that, a lot of what McArdle gets right are uncomfortable topics that people wish to avoid, as discussing them can get one labeled misogynist or racist.…
