Morlocks And The Time Machine

Improved Essays
In our society, there are two types of people. The Morlocks and the Eloi. The Morlocks are smart and aggressive savages. While the Eloi are weak, helpless, and careless. In The Time Machine, by H.G. Wells, certain types of people evolved into what came to be the Morlocks and the Eloi. In our society today, there are many Eloi as we rely more on new science and technology. We have become more addicted and reliant to our own technology, like cellphones. We rely on drugs for almost every illness. For the Eloi of today’s society everything is being given to us on a plate.
The Eloi of our society are dependent on our own technology. We use it to from filing taxes to turning on the lights. One example of this dependence is phones. You see them almost

Technological and scientific advancements have helped us advance in medicine. According to the GateWay Foundation, “Different drugs, because of their chemical structures, can affect the body in different ways… can even change a person's body and brain in ways that last long after… maybe even permanently… When drugs enter the brain, they can actually change how the brain performs its jobs. These changes are what lead to compulsive drug use, the hallmark of addiction.” People are dependent on drugs to cure any illness, instead of naturally curing it. I has become a point that millions have become addicted to them. Partnership for Drug-Free Kids, say that “[About] Twenty-three million Americans are… addicted to alcohol and/or other drugs.” Americans that have become part of the dependence of chemical drugs and not even drug factories/companies can’t do anything about it.
Like the Eloi, we don’t consider the consequences and have become dependant on other things. Our technology and science advancements have lots of Pros. Yet, our addiction and dependence to it have made many more Cons. Medicines and Cellphones are the perfect examples of this type of advancements in science and technology. With their many Pros and Cons stuck with it. We might even end up evolving into the Eloi of H.G. Wells’, The Time Machine. You would not like that,

We as a society have become so dependent on our phones that without it we begin to feel lost and weak as if it’s a drug. Steve Cutt does a great job of depicting the true meaning of our society through these images or as he calls them the “sad truth“. The imagine that has caught my attention was the one that looked like the zombie apocalypse has taken over, except the zombies were actually us humans and our food supply are our phones (technology). My reaction to this image consisted of agreement and worry that we might actually be in big trouble if we continue to live a life where technology is our most important need rather than being happy with what we have. Instead we are becoming a consumer – driven society what always wants more of…

Just like any creator, they made these things to serve them; therefore, as their creators they were responsible for how they use them. It is not technology’s fault if it is used for the wrong reasons, because it cannot discern right from wrong. Human’s reliance of technology is becoming much more evident as years go by. It has already become a part of the daily lives of many others, similar to eating and breathing.…

In the Time Machine, the Time Traveler suggests three theories; the Eoli are the only human descendants and have become lazy due to a too easy life, secondly, he believes that the Morlocks evolved into rugged workers based on their lifestyle, and lastly, the Morlocks have become predators to the Eoli people. On his journey to the future, the Time Traveler concludes his first theory that the Eoli are a result of human evolution. This theory focuses on the negative effects that evolution has had on the human race as a result of living a life too easy. For example, the Eoli people are lazy, blissful, and ignorant to any real hardship in the world. Similar to Darwin's theory of evolution, humans evolve just like everything else and if we continue to…

While reading Brave New World, I noticed that in order to achieve a hedonistic society like the one apparent in Brave New World, drug use has to play a big part in society. While drug use is embraced by Brave New World, it is a growing problem in today’s world. It is something that affects millions of lives daily and degrades mental health. Opioids, especially are a huge problem in today’s world. About 116 people die a day from opioid-related drug overdoses.…

When an individual does drugs, I learned that our brain does not work correctly together. Our brain interprets the drugs that an individual ingests as pleasurable, so dopamine is released. This makes the human brain assume that drugs are needed for survival. Drugs change the chemistry of the brain and change what our brains perceives as our basic hierarchy of needs. After one becomes addicted to drugs their primary survival priority is drugs, followed by what non- addicted brains consider priorities, food, sex and…

The Eloi area of of the two post-human races in H. G. Wells' 1895 novel The Time Machine. By the year AD 8072,701, humanity has evolved into two separate species: the Eloi nd the Morlocks, whereof Eloi live a banal life life of ease on the surface of the earth, while the Morlocks live underground, tending machinery and providing food, clothing and infrastructure for the Eloi. The narration suggests that the separation of species may have been the result of a widening split between different social classes. Having solved all problems that required strength , intelligence, or virtue, the Eloi have slowly become dissolve and naive: they are described a smaller than modern humans, with shoulder-length curly hair, pointed chins, large eyes smalls mouths with bright red then lips, and sub-human intelligence.…

Three of the time travelers theories are the following, the Eloi are the sole descendants of humanity, or hybrid meaning everyone looks similar. Second the Eloi are a result of humanity making everything so simple, safe and easy that they have no need for military, violence, or competition making them week, lazy and stupid. Last he believes that the Morlocks were once slaves to the Eloi, being the “working class”, but took revenge on them and prey and terrorize them. All theories are developed further as he spent more time in the future. The second theory goes with Darwin’s theory that humans will continually evolve goes with the traveler’s theory that everything evened out in humanity.…

In The Time Machine, by H.G Wells, Wells’ view of humanity is shown as the Traveler advances into the future. When he reaches the year 802,701 AD, he encounters two different species of what seem to be the humans of that time period. The Time Traveller names these two species “Eloi” and the “Morlocks”. Both of these represent Wells’ view of humanity that will form as time advances. Although they are both organisms of the future, the way they live their lives are very different.…

“ If it always costs, we are always ready to afford” Most people have become fully acquainted with the side effects of science and technology. They know very well that all the technological innovations have serious effects on their health, social lives and the environment. However, all of them have been ready to pay whatever the cost has been. Therefore, I don’t think that greater scientific literacy at all levels of society has had a positive impact on our attitude towards science and technology. In this essay, I will discuss David Suzuki’s views in his essay: “ It Always Costs”.…

Furthermore, “The Time Machine” begins to heavily be influenced by Social Darwinism. Evidence that the Eloi people represent the “ruling” class and Morlocks are the working class became clear as the Time Traveler described the Eloi as people who depended on the Morlocks for food and supplies. This is also evidence of the idea that not destroying or changing capitalistic societies will lead to a crass difference between the lower and upper class people. Even though people have continually advanced society, the people do not always advance with it.…

The argument on whether drugs should be legalized has been going on for so long now. Some people say as an Americans we have the right to choose whether we want to do drugs or not. It is really hard to control the consumption of drugs, because people are going to do them whether they are legal or illegal. Other people say that the laws that are being enforced now are good to control drugs. “There will also be more unpublicized fatal and maiming crashes, more job accidents, more child neglect, more of everything associated with substance abuse”(M. Kendrecke).…
