More Perfect Union Speech Rhetorical Essay
In a “More Perfect Union” speech at the time he was Senator Obama delivered a speech on March 18, 2008 during the 2008 presidential race. In his speech Senator Obama not only addresses the controversial comments made by his former pastor Jeremiah Wright, but also makes insightful comments about the issue of race in America. Although race can be a sensitive topic anytime you address it, Senator Obama is able to freely discuss it to his audience in a way that all Americans could relate to. What makes the speech so moving is the successful use of the appeals Professor Henry informed us about; Ethos, Pathos and Logos. Each appeal is used not only effectively alone, but they also work together to make an even stronger argument that is able to sway the audience. This made the speech that more inspiring to me and many Americans around the world.
Included in the “More Perfect Union” speech, Senator Obama makes it evident that the most effective appeal to use is Ethos. As a rhetoric tool ethos is used to establish character. Ethos also refers to the way the speaker’s character appears to the audience. In order to establish that trust with his audience, Senator Obama had to present himself in a way that would make the audience believe what he said.
