His family had a religious background. His grandfather was a minister in a small church with about 10 members. His father Martin Luther King Sr. then took over the church following in his in-law’s feet. Eventually this throne would ultimately be passed down onto Martin. At first however he wasn’t passionate about religion which is something that many are shocked by considering that many of King’s speeches and writing are centered around his use of the bible and faith in God. Not only did he love God but he also had a love for education, earning a Ph.D. at the young age of 25. This was in 1955 the same year of the Montgomery Bus Boycott. This was what initially inspired King to say enough and protest the segregation laws that were set in place. He continued to protest with the people against a system that oppressed and continued to declare them less then human. Many protests and arrests later King started to receive heavy criticism from other clergymen like him. This criticism is what inspired him to write “Letter from Birmingham Jail” in 1963 while he was being held in jail in Birmingham, Alabama.
