First Impressions: An Extremely Early "More Life" Review

"More Life" was one of the most anticipated albums of the year, and is one that is surely to gather a load of reviews and opinions. When Drake announced a March 18th release date, he had the world gathered around the radio like it was 1950. Equipped with 22 songs that highlight the versatility of the "6 God", the album will take many through a roller coaster of love and hate moments. With major albums like this, we always listen to the project and tweet about our opinions, as we experience it for the first time. In a new series called "First Impressions", I want to highlight certain albums and give a review on how I took the album on my initial listen. Then when time has passed and I had time to sit with the album, this will show the growth of the album revealing if it had a negative or positive impact on me in the future. With that being said, here's an extremely early review of the

From there Drake transforms into Island Drizzy for four of the next five songs excluding "Jorja Interlude". While "Passionfruit" I'm sure will be one of the most popular records from the album, it's not something I can’t see myself going back to listen to. While I could see myself listening to this at a summertime cookout with friends and family, the song seems like a diet version of "Hold on We're Going Home" from “Nothing Was The Same”, which I still love today. This section of the album for me is nothing more than background music providing you a soundtrack as you're trying to sell a random woman dreams at whatever kickback you're attending. At this point I'm getting frustrated as each song passes, and I find myself begging for him to go back to the more traditional OVO sound. Ask and you shall receive as the album moves to Sampha and

The Drake Equation Introduction: The Drake Equation is an elaboration of the Principle of Mediocrity; an expression that determines the probability of the discovery of extraterrestrial life within the entirety of the unknown universe. This equation combines the things science knows and does not know to come to the equivalent of N, if N is the number of intelligent species in the universe that are communicating amongst each other right now. The Principle of Mediocrity is essentially the assumption of similarity throughout the universe, pertaining to this solar system being the original copy. It allows for scientists to obtain the physiological position using the knowledge previously discovered about the Milky Way and Earth, and…

There are a few tracks that resonated with us whether good or bad, but it wouldn't be fair not to begin with the track "A$AP Forever." Approaching the release of the album , this is the main single everyone knew would be on it. Incorporating a Moby sample instilled a nostalgic vibe to it and helps add to the quality of the track…

The song “Dry Food” is my favorite on the album, a sigh inducing optimistic out-of-love song in 6/8 time, but the last 3 songs don’t worm themselves into my ear the same way the first 5 do. “Dixie” is very stripped down, featuring just Ellie’s doubled up voice, her acoustic guitar, and a really nice humming choir towards the end. With that said, both “Dixie” and “Cushioned Caging” feel a little repetitive, and the repeated motif just doesn’t really grab me. The album ends with “Seekonk,” a swaying, almost rambling track that picks up as it finishes, giving Dry Food a strong, optimistic…

In a genre renowned for masculinity and bravado, Drake has built his successful career on emotions and storytelling. The Toronto born rapper, singer and songwriter, dominates not just rap music, but the entire music industry. With countless infectious hits and four full length studio albums, his impact in the music world is second to none. To put Drake’s almost untouchable position and widespread influence on the hip-hop world into perspective, even allegations having a ghostwriter, someone who secretly writes for another person, did not damage his career or diminish the opinions of fans. Considering the fact that Drake, who is so deeply introspective and fully in touch with his emotions, has the entire hip-hop game in the palm of his hands…

As the crowd pours in, the excitement grows and soon the crowd dies down as the unmistakable sound of Drake’s hit song 'Trophies ' blares through the speakers. Then Vector Arena in Auckland lights up with an amazing laser and pyrotechnic display in time with the music, the rap superstar from Canada had kicked off the show with a bang. This was his first ever show in New Zealand and a much anticipated one too, earlier the show was opened by guest artists 2 Chainz and P Reign; who aren’t as globally known as Drake (also nick named Drizzy). But they still have a few of their own hits, mainly the ones that have Drake featured in them, such as P Reign’s song “DnF” featuring Drake and 2 Chainz’s song “No Lie” also featuring Drake. These are more…

“Classical music isn 't so far apart from pop music”. From last class we made a comparison that Jay-z between Haydn and who I believe that is similar to Franz Joseph Haydn is Drake. Drake comes from a musical family, but Drake grew up with music in his blood. For example His father, Dennis Graham was a drummer for legendary rock star Jerry Lee Lewis. One thing that they both don’t have in common is that Drake before he was a rapper, came to fame by playing wheelchair-bound Jimmy Brooks in seven seasons of the popular teen show name “Degrassi: The Next Generation ”.The…

Nick Drake’s Nefertiti: Book of the Dead is just one of many historical novel set in Ancient Egypt. Depicting the Amarna period in which king Akhenaten not only moved the capital of Egypt to his newly created city of Amarna, but also deemed all gods were inferior to Aten, the sun god, and set Egypt towards monotheism. The book follows Rahoter, a “seeker of mysteries,” (an ancient detective) called from Thebes to the new capital to solve a mystery he knows nothing of until he meets Akhenaten himself. He learns that the beloved and powerful Queen Nefertiti has disappeared, just fifteen days before the new capital’s inaugural festival when all important kings, ambassadors, governors, and tribal leaders will be in the city to observe the all powerful…

It’s one of those songs that makes me want to sequester myself away from the world, and think about what needs to be accomplish. Another one of my favorite lyrics in the song is “I gotta go out and get it, want you to know what I did, want you to know how it went. That's why I keep telling you over and over again, just let me go”. These 5 bars blur the line between reality and fiction, it describes the situation where someone is holding me or in this case the artist Drake back. Stopping both him and I from exploring the world and creating my own legacy.…

Phase one of the five cannons pertains to the invention of the speech. The invention deals with the content of the speech and how the speaker used his/her content to get the message across through inartistic proofs which are facts, statistics etc. and artistic proofs which are the logos, ethos, and pathos aspect of a claim. Throughout the song “Lose yourself,” by Eminem, he includes many personal details of his character “Rabbit” in his movie 8mile as well as information from his personal life. In verse one Eminem is referencing Rabbit in “Yo, his palms are sweaty, knees weak, arms are heavy. There's vomit on his sweater already: Mom's spaghetti.…
