In this article, Hart studies the themes of the novel and their importance in the death of Santiago Nasar. Superstition, one of the themes Hart focuses on, plays a crucial part in the novel, and Marquez relies heavily on superstition as well, seen in the stories he tells. In Chronicle of a Death Foretold, there are numerous instances of superstition seen through the characters and their actions. Many find superstition in people. The narrator’s telepathic mother and Santiago’s mother, who interprets dreams, show superstitious behavior. Others find superstition in actions. The Vicario’s house, is painted yellow in preparation for the wedding, which Marquez believes brings good luck. Also, Bayardo is identified with gold, a color that Marquez has a “pathological fear” of. Superstition appears in the omens that predict Santiago’s death and its brutality. Many townspeople point out how Santiago looks like a “ghost” or “dead man.” In addition, the cook feeds the guts of the rabbit to the dogs, foreshadowing his cruel autopsy. Also, the bishop likes to make soup out of cockerel’s crests and throw the rest of the rooster away. The author sees this as an “allusion to the autopsy and thereby to the destruction of Santiago's body.” The different signs which predict Santiago's death and the apprehensive characters and actions display the importance of superstition Marquez achieves in the

In Chronicle of a Death Foretold, Gabriel Garcia Marquez sets the story of a murder in a small town in Bolivia. The novel takes place in the 1950s, with parallels of political characters such as Santiago to the Cuban regime under Batista and the Vicario bothers to Fidel Castro, Marquez creates an allegory for the rise and fall of left wing Latino governments. Left wing governments, in this context, aim to create equality through regulations while right wing governments govern with the ideology of every man for himself and less regulated business. Marquez’s employment of this allegory creates a satirical work. The murder of Santiago occurs especially brutally as the Vicario brothers “both kept on knifing him against the door with alternate…

Gabriel Marquez’s unique choice of diction and literary allusion creates an allegorical portrait of ideas such as love and death. The choice of diction and literary allusion allowed for Marquez to combine realistic historical narration with fantasy thus creating some of the most notorious stories in the genre known as magical realism. In the story “Death Constant Beyond Love”, one can see the how Marquez’s choice of diction and literary allusion allowed for him to create the fantastical juxtaposition between ideas and philosophies of the main character, Senator Onesimo Sanchez. Senator Onesimo Sanchez cannot seem to accept the inevitable fact of death even though he has previously read the stoic Marcus Aurelius’ 4th Meditation.…

In Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s Chronicle of a Death Foretold, the reliability of the narrator is suspect as he relays the tragicomic story while adopting an omniscient and bias persona despite being a character in the story, creating a sense of ambiguity in regards to the murder. By relaying the story 27 years later, the narrator’s primary source of information is the amalgamation of memories of the townspeople, who all have contradicting and non-linear remembrances of the event. “Many people coincided in recalling that it was a radiant morning with a sea breeze… but most agreed that the weather was funereal, with a cloudy, low sky” (García Márquez 4). The memories of that morning for the individuals reporting the information is the reality they remember or simply the reality they choose to report to the narrator, making the reader unsure of which viewpoint to…
