Pharmacological properties: From 2000 years Morchella species has been used in Traditional Chinese medicine as well as in Japan and Malaysia for the treatment of various diseases (Hobbs, 1995). They contain a wide variety of biomolecules which possess bioactive and nutritional properties, used as a healthcare by traditional hill societies (Wasser and Weis, 1999; Prasad et al., 2002; Ferreira et al., 2009; Ferreira et al., 2010; Alves et al., 2012). Morchella are commonly used for the treatment of indigestion, excessive phlegm and to treat asthma (Ying et al., 1987). All organism possess self defence system which is not sufficient to protect against oxidative damage. Oxidative damage can be reduce by using food containing antioxidant properties (Halliwell & Gutteridge, 1984; Simic, 1988). Antioxidant food can protect the body from damage. Several herbs can be used in this regard but mushrooms are most important. Previous studies has reported the antioxidant activity of mushroom specially Morchella esculenta. Mycelia of Morchella esculenta possess beta-carotene and linoleic acid (Mau et al., 2004), polysaccharides and steroids (Meng et al., 2011; Kim et al., 2011; Gang et al., 2013), fatty acids, phenolic compounds (Mau et al., 2004; Ferreira et al., 2009; Reis et al., 2012; Leal et al., 2013), methanolic extract of fruiting body (Heleno et al., 2013) possess strong antioxidant …show more content…
Chemotherapy and radiotherapy are the modern ways of cancer treatment but have a less safety margin because of its adverse effect on the host normal cells. For the control and eradication of cancer, natural products has been used (Gibbs, 2000; Gao, 2005).In Traditional Chinese Medicine, mushrooms having medicinal properties are commonly used for treatment of cancer. Various countries like Japan, Korea, Russia and U.S. are used extract of medicinal mushrooms for treatment of cancer (Mizuno et al., 1995). Various compounds extracted from the fruiting body of the mycelia possess anti-cancer and antitumor properties (Chang and Mshigeni, 2001; Pankaj et al., 2002). Previous studies had reported the use of Morchella esculenta for cancer treatment. Ethanolic extract of Morchella esculenta (Nitha et al., 2006), polysaccharides extracted from the fruiting body (Elmastas et al., 2006; Zhang et al., 2007; Nitha and Janardhanan, 2008; Meng et al., 2010), phenolic compounds isolated from the fruiting body used for cancer and cardiovascular diseases (Halliwell 2011; Carocho and Ferreira,
