For those seriously ill people around the world, medical marijuana is the only known medicine that can relieve their pain and suffering. “Marijuana has the capability to reduce symptoms of a huge variety of medical conditions such as cancer and glaucoma (Drug 10).” In addition, marijuana has the ability to be used as an effective alternative to synthetic painkillers. Research shows that over 20 states, plus the District of Columbia, allow the medical use of marijuana. One of the main problems medical marijuana can control symptoms of cancer, According to the American Cancer Society, “A few studies have shown that inhaled marijuana can be a helpful treatment of neuropathic pain.” Basically, people who use cannabis extracts in clinical trials tend to need less pain medicine. Many deleterious effects of prohibition run from wasted resources to ruined lives. Each day more and more people are thrown in jail due to the debate of legalizing marijuana not being solved. “There were 658,000 arrests for marijuana possession in 2012 alone, and the majority of these arrests were for nonviolent, low-level offenders (Leafly).” Our police devote thousands of hours to arresting, booking and imprisoning marijuana smokers, many of whom are otherwise law-abiding. The most unfortunate of these arrestees have spent over a decade in prison, in some cases for nothing more than possession of cannabis for personal use. In reference to the American Civil Liberties Union “Enforcing cannabis possession laws costs the U.S. approximately $3.6 billion annually.” The cost of enforcing these laws are increasingly growing to a rate in which the American Government must react to. All of this time, cost, and effort takes our law enforcement away from enforcing more urgent issues that should be dealt with
