One character that values respect is Miss Maudie Atkinson. Miss Maudie spends a great amount of her time making her yard and garden pleasing to the eye. She also respects the privacy of those around her. She does not appreciate when other people get into her business, so she keeps to herself. Most of all, Miss Maudie respects Atticus. She really looks up to Atticus because he always tells the truth and is always the same person in the house and on the streets. When Miss Maudie is talking to Jean Louise Finch (Scout) and Jeremy Atticus Finch (Jem) about their father, she says, ‘“Atticus Finch is the same in his house as he is on the public streets”’ (Lee 61). Miss. Maudie is trying to inform Scout and Jem how honorable Atticus is. He always keeps his word and never changes his look on things, no matter the situation. Respect became a big value by Miss Maudie and Calpurnia. Miss Maudie greatly respects Atticus because he is the same person on the streets and in the house. Calpurnia feels like people disrespect her, so when she sees this happen to someone else she gets upset. Honesty was seen through Jem and Atticus. Jem shows honesty when he starts to pour out all of the children’s secrets about what happened that summer. Atticus shows honesty when he tells Scout he dictionary definition of what rape is. Finally, Judge Taylor and Ms. Dubose most valued effort throughout the novel. Judge Taylor does his best to give Tom a fair trial. Ms. Dubose breaks her morphine addiction before she dies.
