Angelou wants the reader to feel sympathetic towards the animals knowing that they can also fear for their lives. Maya Angelou end the poem by saying, “They existed, we can be” (Line 38), in my opinion this means that humans and animals can live in the same nurtured environment. But I don’t think animals and humans can thrive side by side. There is a hierarchy that humans are at the top of, humans will always utilize them for what best fits us.
