The story begins in the 1940’s at an orphanage in St. Cloud. Dr. Larch is not only the director of the orphanage, but is a doctor in obstetrics and secretly an abortionist, which at the time is illegal. These two services can coexist because one brings life into the world, whether it’s wanted or not, and the other takes life from the world, whether it’s wanted or not. In the movie, Dr. Larch is an abortionist and has taught Homer how to perform this procedure. Homer does not agree with this practice and refuses to perform abortions, even when he recognizes that certain situations would benefit from them, causing a moral dilemma. As the story progresses, Homer delivers a baby and the mother wants nothing to do with the child. She states, …show more content…
At the beginning of Homer’s journey, he is admittedly against abortion and expects people to be responsible enough to control themselves. Then, Rose’s situation is presented to him, and against his morals, he performs the abortion. I believe he recognizes that sometimes the decision of responsibility is taken from you. At the beginning of this tale, Homer is reading a “The Personal History of David Copperfield.” The author is questioning whether he will be the hero of his own life. To me, being the hero of your own life means to be continent with the decisions you have made, and if given the opportunity to do something again, you would do it the same way. To always be humble, kind, and never forget where you came from, no matter where the road of life takes you.
Fuzzy, a young boy at the orphanage, has a bad heart and asthma and must go to sleep every night with a breathing machine that Dr. Larch created. This is due to being born a preemie from an alcoholic mother. He eventually dies of his ailments. Also, a young girl, shows up outside of the orphanage with a high fever. After further examination, it is discovered that she had an abortion performed incorrectly with a crochet needle and ends up dying of

Ingalls 1 Cody Ingalls Professor Rhodes Introduction to Ethics April 15th, 2017 Case Study The debate surrounding abortion rights presents many ethical dilemmas, and is rarely a black and white issue, which makes it difficult to label all abortions as moral or immoral. Many people who are opposed to abortion are willing to support it in certain situations, such as in the case of rape, incest, or the endangerment of a mother’s life. One of these situations is described in the case study “Conceived in Violence, Born in Hate,” an overview of a rape and assault victim who was forcibly impregnated and decided to carry the child to term. The case raises interesting questions about the morality of abortions in the case of rape, and the autonomy of…

Gilgamesh a hero? According to Joseph Campbell, “[a hero] must put aside his pride, his virtue, beauty and life and bow or submit to the absolutely intolerable,” as said in his classic book, The Hero With a Thousand Faces. As explained by Campbell, a hero usually begins with an adventure due to someone or something that has been taken from them, or feels that there is something missing in their normal life. Then that person takes off and goes on a journey full of adventures that are beyond the ordinary to try and recover what he/she lost or even to discover something new, “it’s usually a cycle, a coming and a returning,” (Joseph Campbell).…

"Heroes are ordinary people who make themselves extraordinary" this is a quote from Gerard Way, a famous musician with an insightful viewpoint, regarding heroism. I think this quote represents heroism very simply, yet in the truest way. Homer, in the epic poem, The Odyssey, suggests that Odysseus is a hero. Homer develops this assertion by pointing out Odysseus's heroic characteristics in the various trials that he faces. The speaker's purpose is to inform the audience of what true heroes are like and the traits that they may possess in order for them to understand that Odysseus is the ideal example of a hero, regardless of his flaws.…

Odysseus is a hero because he risked his life for his crew and never gave up. www.Dictionary.com defines a hero as a person noted for courageous acts or nobility of character. This definition is not quite how I would describe a hero, personally. I would define a hero as someone whom completed courageous acts, yes, but they completed the acts not out of necessity or because it will benefit the person completing the act. Instead, a hero is someone who does a courageous act without even thinking about how it will affect them, negatively or positively.…

The timespan between 1960’s and the 70’s was a period in the United States when immorality and relativism poisoned American culture on a large scale and allowed the attitude towards sexuality to be corrupted. The authority of the Catholic Church had been neglected as ideas of radical liberalism spread throughout the western world. This led to many practices, at one time recognized as atrocities, becoming commonplace and accepted in society; the most notable of which was abortion. Jane Roe was a single, unmarried American woman who lived in Dallas County, Texas.…

Homer is referred to as one of the building blocks to the modern civilization. In Paideia: The Ideals of Greek Culture, Werner Jaeger wrote “Plato tells us that in his time many believed that Homer was the educator of all Greece. Since then, Homer’s influence far beyond the frontiers of Hellas [Greece]...” Homer’s writings provided a “fixed model of heroism, nobility and the good life to which all Greeks, especially aristocrats, subscribed.” Many writers today often refer to Homer’s poems for moral plotlines or teachings.…

“In 1965, illegal abortions made up one-sixth of all pregnancy – and childbirth – related deaths” (“Abortion Access”). This justifies that if abortion isn’t legal, then those who want to get rid of the fetus will perform illegal abortions such as self-abortion. As a result, those who perform self-abortion will end up harming themselves. Although many are against abortion because they consider it evil/inhumane, it should be legal because the mother could have been raped, have a disabled fetus, or have an unwanted pregnancy.…
