Without a second thought, Atticus rushed to Toms aid when the lynch mob arrived, being able to calmly talk to them. Although outnumbered, he had the courage not to back down regardless of any harm that could be inflicted on him, in order to protect an innocent black man. To the townspeople, Atticus presented courage when he shot down the diseased dog that posed little to no threat against them. He also is confronted by Bob Ewell after the trail who spits in Atticus 's face but he did not retaliate. Bob questions his courage when he does not respond. As Jem later asks Atticus about the incident, he explains that although Bob has won the trial he had lost all his credibility. He explains how Jem would act if he was in Bob’s shoes, “ You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view…. until you climb into his skin and walk around it.”(Lee.pg 218) Atticus walked away from Bob and does not fight, it takes real courage to nack away from a situation like
