Moral Accountability in L.O.T.F.
In Lord of The flies there are many questions revolving around one high point of interest near the end of the book: Piggy’s death. Why did he die? Who was the most responsible for his death, both physically and morally? Was his death actually necessary for the survival of the rest of the group alive at the time of his death? Who was the most to blame? In this essay we will cover the moral accountability of both Ralph, Roger, Jack, and Piggy and will prove that Piggy’s death was indeed necessary for the rescue and survival of the group.

The most responsible amongst the boys are Jack, Ralph, and Roger, and. Each of them made certain decisions or took actions which led to Piggy’s death. For example, Ralph ignored Piggy’s cries for him not to leave him not only once but twice. “Don't leave me, Ralph.” (LOTF pg175), he said as they were climbing along the rocks, and again before Ralph was going to approach the savage’s camp he said,”Ralph! don’t leave me!” (LOTF pg 176). Ralph consistently ignored and left Piggy behind which led him to the place of his death. Before Ralph left to confront Jack he told Piggy “You kneel down… and wait till I come back” (LOTF pg 175). If Ralph did not tell Piggy to wait behind then he wouldn’t have been in the position where the rock fell. Piggy’s fate could have been avoided if Ralph would have let Piggy follow him but instead he ignored Piggy and left him which got him killed. Roger was also responsible for Piggy’s in a number of ways, for starters Roger was the one who pushed the rock which killed Piggy. If he would have chosen to not do that then Piggy would still be alive or at least not died there and then, “Roger, with a sense of delirious abandonment, leaned all his weight on the lever” (LOTF pg 180). Piggy’s death, in the end, was required for the survival the group on the island as a whole, and was the key event that led to them being rescued. There were a select few characters that were morally accountable for his death, ralph being at the top of the list, then Jack then Roger then even Piggy.
