Moore Gym Observation

Views From Moore Gym
It was around 7:30 Friday night, when myself and four of my friends escaped the rafts of hurricane Joaquin, through the back emergency doors of the historic Moore Gymnasium. All of five of us despite the inclimate weather, were dressed for the cool fall temperatures for the first time this year. As we entered the gym, the sound of Aggie fans cheering for the Lady Aggie Volleyball team, filled my ears. This was my first time being in Moore Gym, which meant observation was natural. The floors were made of concrete tile and they were patterned in light blue and white. The old white walls which once seen thousands of people each day, now a acted as posts for old wires and water pipes

This whole walk to the bleachers, all of seven seconds, we talked about the excitement of seeing women in spandex shorts. Along the walk up the hall, on the left there was a section where the wall stopped, and there was a walkway that gave us a brief opportunity to see the girls in action before reaching our seats. On the right side of the hall were another set of glass doors similar to the ones we walked through. They were labeled "Emergency Exit Only. Alarm Will Sound", they only opened from the inside, and the glass was filled with scratches from constant traffic over the years. Also there was an old air conditioning vent the stood vertically, on it laid a volleyball exhibition booklet for the weekend of October 2nd- October 4th, and a team poster which showed three volleyball players, and the 2015-2016 season schedule. The schedule showed two games for the weekend, one of which was the Friday night game against Savannah State University out of Georgia, and a Sunday noonday game against South Carolina State University. I grabbed one of the packets and continued to walk to the

In August of 1992, Rake’s team had a Sunday morning practice of all conditioning after a bad scrimmage the day before. Two miles was their “warm-up.” Then, the team ran bleachers, a workout dreaded by all Spartans. It was so dreaded that “when Rake yelled Bleachers, half the team wanted to quit” (Grisham 75). During the workout, sophomore Scotty Reardon collapsed on the bleachers “and never regained consciousness” (Grisham 76).…

Throughout my time at university, I have had the opportunity to be a member and captain of the Skidmore Women’s Tennis Team. My time spent on the team has been a rewarding and inimitable experience, allowing me to become a leader and mentor to my teammates as well as throughout the college. To explain more comprehensively my own personal characteristics that make me an excellent candidate for Queen’s Law, I wanted to give you a glimpse into a moment that I think exemplifies the qualities that you are looking for in a law student. Every muscle in my body ached as I bounced the ball at the baseline, a slow and deliberate bounce 1….…

In 1968, the Marching Tar Heels of the University of North Carolina (UNC) released a 7-inch 33 ½ rpm record consisting of eight school songs including “Here Comes Carolina,” “Carolina Fight Song,” and UNC’s alma mater “Hark the Sound.” Past UNC students wrote and composed over half of the fight songs featured on the album, and the student marching band performs the same songs today, nearly five decades later. In fact, the band and fans conclude each game with “Hark the Sound,” linking arms and singing the lyrics a UNC student wrote over 100 years ago in 1897. As the “Go Tar Heels!” exhibit exemplifies with this piece, a game is about more than the athletes.…

In the mid-eighteenth century an educational revolution was brewing in the country. Many people viewed the traditional colleges as aristocratic and outdated with course work that mainly produced educators, lawyers, and theologians. People called for a new method of collegiate learning, one that focused on broadening the education of students by promoting agricultural centered schools, science, and engineering. These new colleges would not only allow students to choose their own classes but also opened up the doors for higher education for women and African Americans. The turning point in this educational reform came when the Land Grant College Act was passed in 1862 allowing many of the new age colleges to be built.…

My visit to Davidson’s campus was during Hurricane Joaquin. While the hurricane did no real damage to Davidson, it made for a cold, wet and potentially dreary weekend. My initial reaction was that “if I like this campus at its worst, then I’ll love it at its best”. My goal for the weekend visit as to better understand Davidson as a school and to meet Coach Willis and the Wildcat volleyball team.…

Tires crunched on the loose gravel parking lot as I was dropped off at my high school’s tennis courts on the first day of school. With my high school requiring a year of physical education, I opted to take the lifetime sport for I was nervous to compete for a spot on the highly competitive teams my school was known for. I was met at the court by 30 other freshmen with a mixed variety of expertise spanning from the first time to ever hold a racquet to a district ranked player. The district ranked player’s father, Mr. Weaver, was a sophomore chemistry teacher who happened to play tennis professionally in his heyday. Mr. Weaver volunteered to teach the freshman tennis team and to train them the basics before they were transferred to “the real…

The gym is silent, if only for a moment. A brief pause in time, as the band waits and the students focus their attention on the empty door. And then, the doors burst open, and 120 girls in red and white stream out into a wave of thunderous applause. The Alice P. McDermott Academic Convocation Center is a gym at the center of the athletic department that is easily dismissed by the large amounts of people that pass by it on a daily basis. It’s a path that many students who live in the dorms on the hill, students and employees who park in the garage, or students and employees who enter from 281 or Hildebrand take every day on their way to the main campus. Because it is disregarded by busy people, it is a bit harder to notice that during certain times the area is very quiet and peaceful. By sitting down and in the midst of the action, it’s easy to analyze the sights, sounds, and smells that occur when all is hectic and when all is still. Every direction is a different sight filled with its own action.…
