Our moon is the only natural satellite and it accompanies earth in anuual journey around the sun. The earths moon is unusually large compared to its partner planet. Scientists thought that when earth was forming a piece was sliced off. The Diameter of the moon is 3475 and the earths diameter is 12756, Which is about one fourth of the earths diameter. Most information of the moon come from the Apollo moon missions. Between 1969 and 1972 there have been six spacecraft landings. Non-attached spacecrafts including the Lunar prospector have also explored the moon. from calculation of the mass of the moon we know it's density is 3.3 that of water. Earths average density is 5.5 times that of water. Geologists have suggested that the

Today we know there is no water and no atmosphere either. Because the moon has no water there is no erosion so it's surface is not constantly changing like the earth. Tectonic forces are also not active on the moon so volcanic eruptions don't happen. Since the moon is not protected by an atmosphere different types of erosion occur. Small space particles are constantly hitting the moon's surface and overtime is creates a smoothing effect on the moon's surface. The moon's rocks become rounded top as result of being at the lunar surface, still the moon most likely hasn't changed majorly in the last 3 billion years except for a few …show more content…
Kennedy was the president of the United States. He wanted humans to travel to the moon, which was risky because the U.S had just started trying to put people in space let alone going to the moon. The president and NASA were confident they could do it despite what people said. Apollo 11's mission was to land two men on the moon. They also had the challenge of returning back to Earth safely. Apollo 11 took off on July 16 1969 with Neil Armstrong, Edwin (Buzz) Aldrin, and Michael Collins were the astronauts aboard the Apollo 11. On July, 20, 1969 They then landed in a lunar module they named, very patriotically "the eagle". Only Armstrong and Buzz walked the moon. Collins stayed in orbit surrounding the moon. They wasted no time on the moon because they only had three hours, they spent it doing experiments involving moon rock and dirt and walking around. Before they left they planted a U.S flag on the surface. The planning and actual travel to the moon and back only took ten years which is fairly short for such a big distance and

The Moon is twenty seven percent the size of Earth, a little more than one fourth. Its diameter is 2,159.2 miles, while its circumference is about 6,783.5 miles. As you can probably tell, the Moon is not a very large celestial object, but it does look relatively large looking up at it from Earth. This is because the Moon is only 238,900 miles away from the…

The largest crater on the Moon is called Aitken which measures 2,500 km across and can be as deep as six km in certain areas. Large, flat, smooth areas known as the maria are pools of solidified lava, filling the basins caused by particularly large impacts; However, the surface facing away from us, sometimes referred to as the “dark side” of the Moon, has mostly a cratered surface. When we look at the moon, we see its phases. We see the different phases because of the Moon's position around Earth. This cycle has a 29 & 1/2 day orbit; in which, we see 8 different phases: Waxing Crescent, First Quarter, Waxing Gibbous, Full Moon, Waning Gibbous, Third Quarter, Waning Crescent, and New Moon.…

The most documented Saturn’s moons are Titan, Enceladus and, Rhea which are huge and have shown possibility of liquid water. Titan (Saturn VI) Titan is the largest of Saturn’s moon (3,201 miles in diameter) and has a dense atmosphere with evidence of surface liquid. Commonly described as a planet-like moon, it is 50% larger than earth’s moon and larger than Mercury. Observations reveal that Titan orbits Saturn once every 15 days and 22 hours and if a person is standing on its surface, Saturn subtends an arc of 5.09 degrees.…

Computer simulations were done to find out the amount of hydrogen that would be produced by the breakdown of olivine minerals. Olivine materials are found in the solid core of the moon. The simulations suggested that enough hydrogen was made by this process to allow the microbes to survive. These studies were done to test if there could be life on this moon. The results show that the moon could have life.(EMMA GREY…

Scientists have also discovered that the moon and the Earth have different chemical properties. If the moon were supposedly formed by a piece of the Earth then both of these large objects would have similar properties. There has been very little attention towards this theory. Scientists have not given it much thought because it seems to improbable. This specific theory was harder to explain and has very little evidence backing it up.…
