Mood in the Cold Equations

Sometimes, even the most innocent and smallest of mistakes can have a drastic effect on things. Since space is pretty much the full extent of human exploration, small mistakes almost always have a very drastic effect. In the short story “The Cold Equations” by Tom Godwin, he creates an intense and tragic mood, by foreshadowing the inevitability of Marilyn’s death, even when she was innocent and unaware of the extreme consequence of her mistake.

The pilot, Barton was intensely shocked when he found out that the stowaway was a girl. As in the story it’s described as, “ It was a girl.
He stared without speaking, his hand dropping away from the blaster, and acceptance of what he saw coming like a heavy and unexpected physical blow.” (Godwin 2). When barton found out that the stowaway was girl, he was completely shocked and saddened, if it would have been a man he would have immediately jettisoned him, but with such a beautiful girl in her teens he didn’t know what to do.

Who is Hal Clement and why would he make the statement that "in hard sf the universe itself is the antagonist"? In order to understand both Hal Clement, his statement referencing hard science fiction and the universe, it was critical to begin my research and analysis with background information on author Hal Clement, before explaining his statement and the relationship to the theme of “The Cold Equation.” Harry Clement Stubbs, a man of multiple names, used the name Hal Clement when he wrote science fiction stories and is known as a leader, if not the leader of the hard science fiction subgenre. Interestingly, if he wrote a science article, he attached his full name, while he painted as George Richard ("Authors: Clement, Hal: SFE: Science…

He puts many twists, turns and hard choices in the book that makes them feel like they were Barton making the decision whether or not to kill this young, blonde, bubbly teen named Marilyn. The mood Steinbeck creates in the last paragraph of the chapter is a mood of sadness and distance. Steinbeck uses words such as “saw” (114) to emphasize the increasing distance between the Joads and the house. By using “saw”, it shows that everything they were seeing was their past and their past would slowly fade away until it was nothing more. The author also uses the word “forlornly” (114) to describe Muley showing the sadness and loneliness of the paragraph. Steinbeck creates the feeling that Muley is the only farmer left after the Joads leave for…

The tremendous amount of work John Steinbeck put into writing the mood of this story is crazy, which is widely noticeable throughout the entire book. At the beginning of the book, everything seemed so innocent and happy with the setting described with “sycamores with mottled, white, recumbent limbs and branches that arch over the pool,” (Steinbeck, 1). As we reach the end of the book, the mood changes to death and horror-filled situations. The song “Hurt” by Johnny Cash shows the mood change at the end of the book using lyrics such as, “What have I become, my sweetest friend?” (Reznor).…
