To have impact onto its on viewers, a monument must be constructed concisely to effectively depict what it’s trying to commemorate. Take the Holocaust museum for example, many critics of the museum believed the design of the building was too large (Document E). Honoring the victims of the Holocaust could not have been accomplish had the museum been to extravagant, which could attract unnecessary attention and controversy. It would serve no justice to the families of the victims who couldn’t even obtain a proper memorial for those who lost their lives in the Holocaust, why even construct it if it strays away from its true purpose? The material plays a key role especially when trying to evoke certain feelings from viewers, When Maya Lin laid out plans to create the Vietnam Veterans Memorial she wanted to commemorate the sacrifices of every individual by engraving their names onto a wall (Source G) It allowed for those to remember each unique attribute that everyone of those individuals possessed. Lin didn’t just want another moment that would seem like a bunch of headstones put together, the wall symbolizes unity of every American soldier who lost their lives in the war, because they each had something they could relate to during the war. Lin was extremely selective of the material that the wall would be constructed out of, but she wanted to appeal to the viewers of the moment. The use of granite encompassed the names of every soldier while reflecting them peacefully on the wall. The wall holds deeper meaning to those who could not make it home and survive the war. It turns the monument into a reality by portraying the names of the victims who made the ultimate sacrifice, by depicting the impact of the war had on individuals, it causes one to reflect on the personal freedoms that they have to this day because of those who
