Monty Python's Spamalot

On the night of Saturday, November 19, I attended the North Carolina Theatre production of Monty Python’s Spamalot. This was part of a five-night run at Raleigh Memorial Auditorium, part of the Duke Energy Center complex. It was a cold, brisk night, and the warm glow from Memorial Auditorium beckoned to me to enter. The auditorium inside in the biggest concert space I have been to not called an arena. Walking in at the second floor, the auditorium spilled out in front of me, welcoming, with large chandeliers and rich red seats. The chatter from the surprisingly mixed age group of people overwhelmed the room. From elderly couples to single women out on the town and families with kids who seemed more interested in their phones than the prospect …show more content…
The joke is that the cast “mishears” the narrator and thinks that he says the musical takes place in Finland and not England. Melody or a succession of single pitches recognized as a whole, in the “Fisch Schlapping Song” is very upbeat and boisterous. The range for the song is fairly static throughout the three choruses, and the lyrical and instrumental verses. Each section has conjunct melodic motion as well. Texture or a number of pitches or melodies sounding at the same time with reference to the things creating them, during the three choruses is very thick with the on stage cast singing and the classical strings, woodwinds, and cymbals playing. All three choruses also have homorythmic texture. The lyrical verse’s homophonic texture is largely the same; however, the singing thins to a single lead singer and the cymbals are replaced with handclaps from the on stage cast. During the instrumental verse, the homophonic texture is at its thinnest due to the lack of singing and instead of handclaps the percussion is replaced with a fish slap …show more content…
The instrumentation of the song is very uplifting with piano and strings almost constantly rising. During the climax at the end, the entire audience broke out into cheers for the amazing note held by Ta’Rea Campbell, playing the Lady of the Lake. However, the part that made this my favorite song of the show was the lyrics. Campbell hilariously complains, “Whatever happened to my part?” She sings that it is, “halfway through Act 2,” and that she feels she has, “been off stage for far too long.” Because of the way the song is played, it could be easy to ignore the lyrics and imagine it encouraging another cast member to continue the plot. In this way, it reminds me of “Hey Ya” by Outkast where Andre 3000 says, “y'all don't want to hear me, ya just want to dance.” The hilarity here is also due to the character breaking the fourth wall to clearly send a message to the audience that this musical should be her show and not any of the, “British knights, prancing ‘round in woolly tights.” Overall, the song made me very happy despite the Diva’s

A naïve sense is created when the lyrics tell that the dancing queen is “young and sweet, only seventeen” which adds to the innocence of the songs theme. The line “you can dance, you can jive, having the time of your life” is again repeated from the first verse as a reminder or almost even to fully integrate the idea into the listeners mind that they too can still enjoy life whether young or old. Overall in this verse, the music is what really offsets the song into a jovial tone rather than the lyrics. Without the positive melody, the lyrics would be lost or would be rather…

On the evening of Saturday October 8th, the cast of the play Fuddy Meers took the stage and put on a unique and exquisite performance. The play took place in the Temple Theatre which I found was a highly interesting venue. There were several different elements that I found greatly intriguing during the course of the ninety minute performance, however, there were a few elements that I felt were also lacking. The first element that I believed helped to add significance to the performance was the stage setup(1). The revolving setup of the stage was perfect for this play and it allowed much versatility for the characters during specific instances.…

One of the stand out technical features of this production was the set. Its softened pale hues from the apartment to the staircases allowed for the vintage aesthetic to truly transport the audience back to the roaring twenties. Glenelg Country School’s production of “The Drowsy Chaperone” captures how the magic of theatre can truly transport you to another…

Part of Manifesto’s 10th Annual Festival Art Show included a ten-day art exhibition called “Fly Girl Fly,” which launched on September 10, 2016. Fly Girl Fly was envisioned to be “a celebration of girl magic” that showcased the “creative brilliance and powerful perspectives of a talented group of female artists leading the way in painting, mixed media, photography and installation” (Facebook). The launch party of the exhibition on September 10 included live DJs and alcohol from 7:00 pm until 3:00 a.m. and was “Pay What You Can” (PWYC) until 10:00 p.m., at which point it became $5.00 for entry. While the Manifesto Festival is sponsored by TD Canada Trust and therefore receives quite a bit of media promotion, the marketing for this specific…

This past weekend I went to view Southern Miss’s Trojan Barbie. This play was an amazing display of the range of talent in Southern Miss’s theatre department. As I stepped through the doors of Tatum Theatre, I was transported back to Ancient Troy. Along with the set, the preshow soundtrack made me excited for the play that I was about to see. When the lights dimmed and the play began, soldiers walked out from the vomitoriums and surrounded audience members.…

It was a rainy night, an overcast kind of night as a lot of teens and young adults crowded outside Brooklyn’s “Baby’s All Right” waiting to be let in. “Baby’s All Right” is a bar, diner, and music venue all in one, with it’s stage and floor situated in the back. The stage has speakers, microphones, drums, turntables guitars and so forth situated on it. As we all waited patiently in the rain for what seemed forever they finally began to check tickets and let people funnel into the back.…

I’m sitting alone in the front pew of the University of Virginia Chapel on a cold December night. In front of me there is a tall metal stand with a set of bongos perched precariously atop. Behind me sits the entire crowd of the sold out Virginia Women’s Chorus Candlelight Concert. When I arrived in Charlottesville months earlier, I could have never expected to be here. I have just finished performing a piece with the chorus minutes earlier, when a member of the chorus steps forward and addresses the audience to explain and introduce the next piece.…

Over the centuries, theatre conventions evolved from the highly presentational performances of the Greeks to the extravagance of Elizabethan productions and eventually conglomerated to produce contemporary theatre. The University Playhouse’s performance of Acting: The First Six Lessons expressed this conglomeration of Greek and Elizabethan conventions through elements of presentational theatre, a non-localized set, and a supporting cast that functioned similar to a chorus or ensemble. This performance also altered conventions through the addition of female actors, use of representational aspects, adaption of the functions of the chorus or ensemble, and lack of a raised stage. In the following sections, I will discuss the adoption and adaptation…

Research Essay Portfolio Task 5 Leonard Bernstein’s “West Side Story”-1957 is a landmark composition in the development of the American musical and it took many years for the idea to be developed into a musical. They had the idea of writing a deep meaning musical which would show people what real life was all about. The original idea was for a Jewish girl and a Catholic boy to fall in love. This theme however changed when the Puerto Ricans moved into New York and the story line was altered to focus rather on an American-Puerto Rican love story.…

One of my favorite traditions of the holiday season is the classic Charles Dickens story, “A Christmas Carol”. It’s been a ritual for us to see this play each year and as such, we make a special trip to San Francisco to attend this show at the American Conservatory Theater on Geary. However, this cultural critique assignment gave us the ideal reason to attend this performance locally. Although we have lived in the neighborhood directly behind campus for over eighteen years, we have never attended an event at the Harris Center.…

The heat from the stage lights, the watchful gazes of the audience, and the sweat dripping off of our faces as we struggle to remember our lines, these sensations of being on stage are what caused the performing arts to become not only an activity, but also a passion and an unexpected source of personal growth. Through my experiences in drama and music I have been able to discover my own meaning of fulfillment and define who the person behind my appearance truly is. My passion in the performing arts started when I was a young child first learning to play the violin. Picking up the violin at the age of 6, I became stuck on one of the most basic songs for almost a whole year. At that time no one believed that I could play the violin, my teacher thought that I was too hyperactive and even my mom attempted to convince me to quit.…

For this concert report, I attended a concert at The Runcible Spoon. This was on a Tuesday evening and the environment was different than I thought. What struck me was the environment of the concert. I didn’t feel like I was really at a concert as I thought that I would because of the informality and it being at a concert. From going to this concert, I was able to conclude that concerts at restaurants have a much different feel to them than formal concerts.…

“The theatre must give us everything that is in crime, love, war, or madness, if it wants to recover its necessity” (85). “Practically speaking, we want to resuscitate an idea of total spectacle by which the theatre would recover from the cinema, the music hall, the circus, and from life itself what has always belonged to it” (86). “It is a matter of knowing whether now, in Paris, before the cataclysms which are at our door descend upon us, sufficient means of production, financial or otherwise, can be found to permit such a theatre to be brought to life – it is bound to in any case because it is the future. Or whether a little real blood will be needed, right away, in order to manifest this cruelty”…
