In the movie Monty Python The Quest For The Holy Grail there are many examples of mocking medieval literature. The movie satirized characteristics of medieval literature by retelling a classic tale as a parody. The film mocks everything from chivalry and the knights code of honor to the role of religion in medieval times. The film starts with king Arthur pretending to ride on horseback while his squire clangs two coconuts together to simulate the sound of horse hooves. Their are plenty of examples of where the film makes fun of medieval literature. One of the things that is mocked consistently is the knight’s code of chivalry. Chivalry is the combination of qualities expected of an ideal knight, especially courage, honor, courtesy, justice, and a readiness to help the weak. One part of chivalry is medieval battle etiquette. One good example of where the code of chivalry is mocked is when Sir Robin is supposed to fight the three headed knight. Sir Robin ends up running off while the three heads were arguing. The reason this isn't chivalrous is because knights are honor bound to defend themselves if they are challenged. …show more content…
The primary religion in Europe at the time was christianity. Medieval times christianity was very strict and fear of God meant humbling yourself. A good example of this movie mocking this part of christianity is when God gives them the quest for the Holy Grail. When God appears, King Arthur and his knights bow before him but this upsets God because everytime he tries to talk to someone they start to grovel. After making them stand, King Arthur and his men attempt to avert their eyes and this makes him upset counter to the ideas of religion in medieval
