At the start of the story Monty would be described as “the biggest pest”, “always on the loose”, an old dog with a fat and bloated stomach, his legs are skinny, he has dull black fur with scabs and crusts, he has bald red patches with sores, he is neglected, he is not well-fed, and he smells. From this information, I think Monty would feel neglected and ignored. He feels abused, not cared for and unloved. Monty feels miserable, insecure and he wants someone to care for him even if it’s a little better than the Claphman’s care. This is how Monty is described and how I think he feels.

self. David Parker has seen the separation of his mother and father and he as a teen finds this problem hard to cope with. He has a conflict with himself because he is unable to feel loved by anyone. He also feels angry which restricts him from letting others care about him or him to care for others. This same conflict relates to Monty the dog because Monty feels as if he isn’t being loved and feels as if he doesn’t deserve care. The fact that Monty is being neglected hurts Monty from the inside and this is also why he wants to suicide. This is the main conflict in “The Dog Who Wanted To Die”. This conflict is settled when the burglar attempts occur and Monty is hurt. At the vet David learns that Monty is in his recent state because of neglect and this is when he feels sympathy for the dog and decides to take care of him. At the end, the readers are able to see that David’s life has become way different than when his dad had left and a major portion of this was because of the relationship that formed in between David and Monty. This is when the problem is solved because now David accepts love and returns love to those around him. He is also able to come out of the dark and stop hiding from his parent’s divorce. Also, the dog Monty is taken care of, by an owner that is thoughtful and the wagging of his tail shows that the dog is finally happy and he is able to receive love. This is how the main conflict is
