Over the course of The Cask of Amontillado, Montresser made it known that he was upset, yet we don’t know what had made him so angry as to murder Fortunato. However, we do know that Fortunato must have considered Montressor his friend and we can assume they’ve known each other for some time. Edmund and Mondego also were friends and betrayed one another, but in their case, we know why. Mondego was jealous. His envy towards Edmund was directed towards Edmund’s fiancée for the most part. Even though Mondego later becomes a count and can buy the company of as many women as he wants, he still wishes for the love of Mercedes, to the point of willingly betraying his friend, using his knowledge of Napoleons letter to get things rolling.
