“I must not only punish, but punish with impunity.” Those were Montresor’s thoughts when he took revenge against Fortunato. Everything started when Fortunato insults Montresor, making him very angry and eager to get revenge. Montresor carefully plans a revenge that took place in the carnival eve. Montresor leads Fortunato to his catacombs by telling him that he had a cask of Amontillado for him to taste. Eventually, deep in the catacombs Montresor finally carries out his revenge against Fortunato.
Everyone wants different things in life, some will go ahead and take an extra step to get what they want, only very ambitious people will go far for what they want. When Montresor was plotting his revenge one of the things he was thinking about was: “At length I would be avenged; this was a point definitely settled.” Montresor’s ambition was enough for him to not give up on his complicated plans, and while a lot of people would’ve gave up on a plan like that, Montresor didn’t. Reading from Montresor’s point of view you can tell that with his anger also came craziness and both of those factors can be extremely dangerous as well.
