Montresor's Hypnotism

The narrator named Montresor tells this story in first person. Immediately at the beginning of the story Montresor lets you know his hatred towards an individual named Fortunato. According to Montresor, Fortunato has insulted him repeatedly and has vowed revenge on him. During carnival night, Fortunato has had a few drinks and Montresor takes advantage of this by enticing him about a new sherry wine named Amontillado. A wine, which happens to be one of Fortunato’s favorite, since he considers himself to be an expert of fine wines. Fortunato was enticed by Montresor when he asked him to follow him to his “wine vault”, which was hard to reach because of the dampness where it was stored. Edgar Allen Poe becomes very detailed in the description of the symptoms of the disease as though he’s carrying the disease himself. His interest in mesmerism has a great deal to do with the fact that to his knowledge no one has been hypnotized before death, and he wonders if by doing so, death can be stopped or avoided. Valdemar is unable to speak or express his feelings while being in the state of mesmerism with the exception of his is tongue vibrating when asked questions. His body had been in the exact same spot for seven grueling months and he was never able to do anything about it except vibrate his tongue. Valdemar’s body is basically decomposing as though he is already dead, welcoming the idea of being awoken from his state so that he can die in peace at once.
