Montresor, a young man going through a rough patch, is awoken from a dreamless sleep by a foul smelling drunk. Cursing about Montresor missing school, his drunken father shouts about how his mother would be furious if she were still alive. The groggy teen looks up to see the time- of course; the drunk in his room woke him up two hours before he needed to. Sometimes Montresor wished he could move out, away from this crowded small town, away from his sick father. Now that he is awake Montresor gets up, knowing there is no hope of going back to sleep. Once he has gotten dressed and eaten, the boy grabs his bag and a sloppy sandwich. Kicking the door shut behind him, Montresor starts towards the school. Trying to push away his home life Montresor thinks about his history project and the enticing book that his English class is reading. Montresor enjoys being in school, but it is no escape from his environment at home; the other kids like to pick on him and leave him out. But maybe today is different… A new student was introduced in first period advisory. Was his name Fortunato? Montresor only remembered the way Fortunato smiled at him before taking a seat. Montresor is hit the idea that today would be a great day.

Being apart as much as they are now, Montresor noticed the longing he felt and the jealousy that panged in his chest when Fortunato hung out with the other students. Montresor went over the friendship until it was worn and memorized in the soft tissue of his brain, at last he realized what the aching in his heart could be; heart break, he had started feeling for Fortunato. Montresor felt a surge coarse through him and spurred into action. As he walked, he decided he would tell Fortunato and go from there. The walk to the lunchroom never seemed so long, but once there he locates Fortunato, catches his caramel brown eyes and motions him
