Montresor Symbolism

The story is enhanced by the symbolism of the costumes. The story “The Cask of Amontillado” by Edgar Allen Poe, Poe used a lot of thought into the costumes that Montresor and Fortunato wore. Poe wanted to make the costumes represent what they are going to do in the story. In the story Fortunato did something to Montresor, so he saw out revenge. During the carnival, Montresor lured Fortunato into his catacombs, an underground burial for deceased family members, then Montresor got him drunk. Montresor later chained Fortunato to the wall, next he made a wall in front of Fortunato. Montresor, then dropped a fire stick into the wall, and killed Fortunato. The costumes worn by both Montresor and Fortunato are appropriate to the story and to the characters. …show more content…
Montresor’s black silk mask is the right choice for his character. The black silk represents the darkness inside him. The mask symbolizes the mystery of Montresor’s character. “These orders were sufficient, I well knew, to insure their immediate disappearance, one and all, as soon as my back was turned.”(Poe 85) The quote is saying that Montresor was being suspicious fro making sure that no one was at his house. The costume told the readers that he was the one who was going to be the fool. He was being a fool because he was unknown of what was happening to him, and also he basically let Montresor get him drunk and then kill him. He was being the costume he was wearing he was being clueless of what was happening to him. “For the love of God, Montresor!”(Poe 89). The quote is the last words of Fortunato, he was clueless and fell for Montresor’s trick. He was there dying because of his weakness of the unknown.
Both Montresor and Fortunato’s costumes were appropriate to this story, because they represented who they were, and what they would act like in the story. Also the costumes were something to know the characters better. The readers did not know that much about the characters, but by the costumes we got to know them better, and get an inside of what is going to happen to them. Poe gave Montresor his mask to make him look mysterious, and suspicious. Poe gave Fortunato’s his costume because he had the weakness of the unknown, which means he was clueless, and also he fell for all of the parts in Montresor’s
