Montresor Insecurities

There are times in our life where we meet people that seem to be one’s friend, but are truly the ones spiking the knife through another back. The ones you thought that were there for you but turn around to tell everyone what you told them. Some even envy each other to the point where they end up hurting the relationship or even each other. Montresor in “The Cast of Amontillado” demonstrate such action towards Fortunato by burying him in his family catacomb. Through characterization of Montresor, Poe demonstrates that people with insecurities can easily take thing out of context and can cause them to ruin a good friendship. In today’s society we see such behavior through one another and in social media. People like to pretend to be someone their …show more content…
Even Fortunato has his insecurities due to the fact that he continues on to insult Montresor. “I resumed the trowel and finished without interruption the fifth, the sixth and the seventh tire” (726). Each layer of brick that Montresor puts up represents cementing his jalousies and insecurities of the insults that he has taken from Fortunato for all those times. He uses his jalousies and insecurities to trap his friend and killing him. For you to be able to bare a thousand of injures, what make that so different that it would be an insult? Montresor tells us that “The thousand injuries of Fortunato I had borne as I bet could: but when he ventured upon insult, I vowed revenge”. Injuries imply that it is an accident or it was done on purpose, it wasn’t meant to be intentional. But an insult means that it was something that was building up and giving base for revenge. Just like if someone keeps hitting you unintentionally at some point you’re going to think that they’re doing it on purpose. Fore example, when you are getting teased and being punched most likely you are yelling stop, stop, stop! And this will just make you angry to the point you will want to hit them back and get revenge. There are times where our friends would keep pushing till they hit your buttons and by the time they have accomplished this you are already plotting your revenge upon them. Just like how Fortunato continued to insulate Montresor to the point where he plots revenge on Fortunato. Montresor was able to do this because he did not change the way he act towed Fortunato Montresor gave Fortunato no reason not to trust him. “Neither By word nor deed had I given Fortunato cause to doubt my good-will” (722). In the cast of Amontillado, Montresor is characterize as an insecure, petty vengeful person who is looking for a way to feel better about himself by taking out his poor friend who

Unregretful Actions In the story “The Cask of Amontillado” by Edgar Allen Poe Montresor felt so passionate that he was wronged by Fortunato. Montresor had ulterior motives already in mind for his oppressor. Saying that he insulted him was enough for Montresor to vow to seek revenge. Those with this condition find themselves requiring an excessive amount of admiration, exploiting others in ways that takes advantage of them, and lacking empathy towards others by not recognizing their feelings (Narcissistic). While it is not apparent that Montresor needs “excessive” admiration, it is revealed that his desire to murder Fortunato is due to the fact that he insulted him as the story begins with the sentence “The thousand injuries of Fortunato I had borne as I best could, but when he ventured upon insult I vowed revenge,” proving that this “revenge” was merely over a negative comment towards Montresor (Poe 166). It seems to show that Montresor was easily offended by remarks that were not to…

Everybody, despite what they say, has been driven by the fundamental force of anger to get revenge upon one another. Weather it’s between something foolish or something catastrophic, we all have plotted another's destiny because of our hatred. In “The Cask of Amontillado” by Edgar Allen Poe, the author illustrates two characters, one named Montresor who vows revenge upon another, Fortunato. When Fortunato insulted Montresor, he made it his mission to destroy Fortunato. He took advantage of Fortunato's level of intoxication and brought him down to the Montresor catacombs, chained him to the wall and sealed him away from the rest of the world.…

The main character which is Montressor, kills Fortunato because of something he said to him so he wanted to get “revenge”. One of the quotes that best shows Montresor’s insanity is when he says, “I placed my hand upon the solid fabric of the catacombs, and felt satisfied. I reproached the wall. Ii replied to the yells of him who clamouered. I reechoed, I aided, I surpassed them in volume and in strength.…

After he has only one brick left to complete the wall that will seal off Fortunato forever, he says, 'My heart grew sick...' but he immediately blames that twinge of guilt on the dampness of his surroundings" (Lineberger 4). There is no intent of sympathy for Montresor because of Fortunato's wrongdoing of him, but instead to judge him. Montresor's point of view, intensifies the effect of moral shock and horror; delving into the inner workings of a sinister…

Starting from a young age most people are taught to not retaliate, or turn the other cheek. Sometimes that does not always work out. When Montresor says about Fortunato, “I must not only punish but punish with impunity,” (Poe) he is showing that he has turned this thought over and over in his head. Montresor’s plan for revenge is clear and premeditated. Montresor chooses to act upon his revenge, and he is going to make Fortunato know that it was he who is punishing him.…

Montresor does not consider himself a despicable man as he notes “You, who so well know the nature of my soul” (Poe, para. 1). However, because his patience has already run thin he can’t bear the abuse anymore. The following lines illustrate this idea, “The thousand injuries of Fortunato I had borne as best could, but when he ventured upon insult, I vowed revenge” (Poe, para. 1). It seems to me that Montresor is a good man who has been enduring the abuse of Fortunato for an extensive time. After reaching his limit, Montresor believes that he is entitled to carry out revenge without facing punishment since he has the worthy purpose of restoring fairness.…

During his recall of events he mentions a conversation between himself and Fortunato about his family motto, “Nemo me impune lacessit” which translates into “No one provokes me with impunity”. (167). Montresor was raised with the belief that anyone who provokes him must be punished; therefore, Montresor is able to rationalize that his act of revenge is the only answer to the insults he received by Fortunato. Growing up in a family that preached and lived by its motto, it is reasonable to say that Montresor knows no other way of handling this situation. The family motto contributes to Montresor’s justification that retribution must…

I promised myself that I would make him pay for this – that I would have my revenge” (Poe 68). Prior to this statement, Montresor says that Fortunato had hurt him several times before, but that it did not bother him near as much as the present offense. The loss of pride in his name propelled him to seek revenge and kill Fortunato. In Robert E. Morsberger’s essay, he states, “…but when Fortunato dared insult him, he vowed revenge.…

Those representing The Cask of Amontillado could have stated that it may be unclear to say what type of disorder Montresors has, it could quite possibly be an anger issue. As it says in the short story, “He is an ignoramus” meaning he is a stupid person since Fortunato had insulted him, this had pushed Montresors over the edge and made him feel the need to have revenge. In the story, it doesn’t exactly tell the reader how Fortunato offended Montresors, however when reading the story, the reader can assume the author is talking about Masonry. “Montresors pulls out a trowel” (Gabrielle Hanlon).
