In this short story, Montresor is wanting to seek revenge after Fortunato made an insult to him and his family. Montresor says he has a barrel of wine in his vault which is very rare during the carnival season. Montresor has a very well thought out plan in killing Fortunato and he is successful. In Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Cask of Amontillado,” the narrator Montresor is insane.
Montresor chained up Fortunato and started layering bricks. He stopped working to hear Fortunato struggling, alleges, “The noise lasted for several minutes, during which, that I might hearken to it with the more satisfaction, I ceased my labors and sat down upon the bones” (Poe 217).
