Few Italians have the true virtuoso spirit" (Poe, 62). Although it is mentioned as a strength, Montresor is able to uniquely use it to his advantage. In the beginning of their encounter, Montresor states that he has "received a pipe of what passes for Amontillado, and I have my doubts" (Poe, 62). Montresor is able to lure Fortunato to come to his vaults by tempting him with this specialty wine that he claims he has in the peak of carnival season. Not only does he use Fortunato's expertise in wine to get him to come to his vaults, but he also uses it in order to ensure that he is not fully aware of what is going on. Throughout the journey through the vaults, Montresor is constantly giving Fortunato wine in hopes of getting him intoxicated. Fortunato does not deny that drinks that are offered, and as a result, he becomes intoxicated. When speaking of Fortunato's …show more content…

Although these are three major reasons, there are many other ways in which he shows his expertise such as the extensive plan that was evident.
