He began to frantically speak out loud "Did I seal the bricks completely? Is there anyway he could escape? Did anyone see me?" Montresor quickly looked around as if he was being watched by someone. He began running into the cold dark night. The more he thought the faster he ran and with all the thoughts jumbled into his head he failed to see the rocks in front of him. Pulling himself together he says “What can I do for you?” “My husband never came home last night and I know you two are great friends. Do you have any idea where he could be?” Lady Fortunato says with a raspy voice as if she had been crying all night. The two then walked in the door, through the long dark hallway and stopped when they got to the kitchen. The kitchen window was open letting in just enough light to brighten up the room. Lady Fortunato took a seat at the kitchen table which looked like it hadn’t been used in years. She tried to pull herself together again. “Could I get you anything?” Montresor asked. “A water would be great, thank you.” Lady Fortunato

To ensure this, Montresor teases and taunts Fortunato by offering to Luchesi to taste the wine because “if anyone has a critical turn, it is he (Poe 2).” This challenges Fortunato’s self-worth and insults both Luchesi and Montresor in the process by stating “you have been imposed upon; and as for Luchesi, he cannot distinguish Sherry from Amontillado (Poe 2).” This goes to show that Fortunato's pride is of such importance that he is too ignorant to notice the effect his digs have on Montresor, someone who is meant to be his friend.
