The role of the teacher and the role of the learner are based around developing the unique strengths of each individual. The role of the teacher is to guide the individual to having a full understanding of themselves, developing their own beliefs and values and should not be to control what they think. As Socrates believed the teacher cannot pour information into a student’s mind as its value to the student will decrease as they attempt to understand” (Johnson & Reed, 2008, pp 21-31). My personal philosophy resonates with this idea that a teacher can lead a student to truth but only the learner can find it which means the teacher’s role is much greater than simply giving them information for education to be valuable. Since the role of the teacher is to guide learner into developing a better understanding of themselves a teacher should aim to bring out the best in every learner. For example, if a teacher observes the student well and knows their interest and also notices the things they do with ease and natural ability, then they can begin to guide the learner and build on those strengths. The role of the teacher should be to scaffold the thinking of the learner thus they can discover their innate self and purpose. I believe that everyone has unique abilities and strength which education should aim to develop through providing direction.
