In Montana 1948 , Wesley Hayden experiences multiple circumstances where he has conflict with his family and society. An example is his wife Gail. Gail wanted Wesley not to live in Montana and be sheriff (Watson 7). Wesley grew up in Montana where his family has been known as Sheriffs of Mercer County. The Hayden Sheriff started with Wesley’s father (Watson 8). The Hayden family have been known to be the law in town. Although she is taught to live by these customs, she personally did not want to live the way that she was taught, rather she wanted to live with more freedom that Creole people had (Chopin 10). Edna was a woman who was taught to live like what is now considered to be a housewife. She was to tend to all the needs around the house, the needs of the kids, and the needs of the husband. In The Awakening, Edna’s husband comes home to see that the kids are in bed, but one of his kids seemed to be getting a fever. Edna unaware of the condition of her child, seems to ignore and pay no attention to what her husband mentioned about her son (Chopin 7). In another incident, one of the Pontellier boys hurt themselves while playing. Instead of him running to his mother’s arms with tears in his face, he would wipe his own tears, pick himself up, and continue playing (Chopin 9). Again this shows that Edna was not the mother that society viewed. Society looks at mothers for comfort and well-being. But Edna, on the other hand, was unattentive to the needs of her children and kept to herself, which was a conflict that she had with society, not wanting to live the way society wanted her to
