His beliefs and ability to connect to the world were reflected on and changed. Montag becomes more connected to his surroundings by participating in activities he once frowned upon. As Clarisse tasted the rain, Montag says, “I don’t think I’d like that” (22). Then as the day progresses, he slowly walked on the pavement alone and “tilted his head back in the rain, for just a few moments, and opened his mouth” (25). She influences him to try new things. At first, Montag is against the idea of tasting the rain. Although, he thinks of Clarisse and her actions while he is walking, later that day, and tries to taste the rain. Before Clarisse, Montag would not have even thought to stop and taste the rain. His beliefs are changed by Clarisse because she makes him examine his job and the role of firefighters. Montag placed pressure on his eyes when “suddenly the odor of kerosene made him vomit” (53). However, he used to think that “it was a pleasure to burn” (1). His beliefs and connections to his profession change, He used to believe that burning books was an amazing career. Therefore, Since Clarisse questioned him, he became open to the harsh reality of society and knew what he was doing was wrong. Clarisse is Montag’s saving grace. She makes Montag’s mental state unstable by helping him notice how ignorant he has been his whole life. Clarisse helped rekindle his emotions by helping him formulate his own opinion about his marriage. Clarisse not only restored his emotions, she helps Montag step back and realize his spiritual beliefs. The impact in Montag’s mental, emotional, and spiritual state since Clarisse arrived provides evidence to support that she is the catalyst of change in the book Fahrenheit 451.
