Monsters In Beowulf

In the Old English epic, Beowulf the epic hero is perceived as the hero because of his human like strength, courage, devotion, and loyalty. Throughout the poem, Beowulf encounters three majors battles with vicious monsters, as Beowulf wins each battle he wins a “trophy”. Beowulf is battling these monsters using his mind, there is a different weapon and a different technique used to fight the three monsters off. The first battle, between Grendel and Beowulf. This battle is believed to have tested the human strength of Beowulf. As Grendel arrived late at night attacking Beowulf's men, he was expecting it to be that easy to defeat him as well. Beowulf was expecting the monster to show, as Grendel went to grab Beowulf, he instead grabbed Grendel. Grendel slipped on the puddle of blood from the men he had earlier killed, Beowulf ripped his arm off and he then died. Grendel's mother attacked the Herot in hoping to seek revenge. When Grendel's mother found out about her son, she took her grief out on Hrothgar by killing his best friend. Grendel’s mother was coming for Beowulf with Grendel's claw and Hrothgar's best friend, her plan was to claw Beowulf to death. Beowulf ventures out into the lake, where Grendel's mother lives, and kills her with the magical sword he finds.
