The text states that ” Operator, operator, something’s wrong with the phone, operator!” This text means that the power is out. According to the writer “ Steve. I think we better keep an eye on you too.” “ Narrow them down. Make it easier for you.” Charlie is starting to accuse everyone, but himself. As the selection implies “ He suddenly pulls the trigger. The sounds explodes in silence.” These facts indicate Charlie was scared of who it was, so he shot Pete Van Horn. In “passage 17,” tone's of suspicion and curiosity portray the detective’s need to keep a keen eye and observe the situation in great detail. Despite the fact that he thinks everyone believes he is a good-for-nothing drunk, he disproves this assumption by examining the property effectively and showing up the owner’s house cleanly dressed, well shaven, and most importantly sober. The author's use of word choice, Imagery, and organization to help support the detectives misunderstanding. The authors use of negative diction, helps heighten the sense nervousness and need for curiosity. The author continues to use words such as “dark,” “hard-coal black,” and ”empty fireplace.”…

After reading the texts, “To what extent did the Cold War shape the American domestic life of the 1950s?”, and “Monsters Are Due on Maple Street”, written by Rod Serling. I discovered that Rod Serling never specifically cites the Cold War in his teleplay “Monsters”. Yet Mr. Serling portrayed throughout the story to illustrate a picture of paranoia, distrust, and fear that created an atmosphere of the United States during the Cold War. To begin with, the setting in the beginning of the of both texts were peaceful and ideally. However, after electricity stopped working on Maple Street people were flustered.…

Rod Serling’s message to the readers of “The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street” is that fear causes quick, snap judgements that can lead to bad decision-making. This theme begins to appear in the story after a “meteor”, or an alien spaceship, lands near a neighborhood called Maple Street, and intentionally causes a strange power-outage. But when Les Goodman’s car starts suddenly, with him being nowhere near it, the neighbors begin to accuse Les of having something to do with the meteor and the weird power failure. They start to think this because his car was the only electronic device on the block that was working, even though a car starting completely by itself is ridiculous. This proves the point that fear leads to people making snap judgements without really thinking it through, because when Les’ car suddenly starts, everyone immediately becomes suspicious and demands answers from Les.…

Frederick Douglass once said, “where justice is denied, where poverty is enforced, where ignorance prevails, and where any one class is made to feel that society is organized conspiracy to oppress, rob and degrade them, neither persons nor property will be safe.” We spend most of our lives reading or watching all the unfortunate things happening around us. We are so quick to judge and believe everything we hear or see. Life was the same back in the1960’s. People were more gullible and that’s because they believed what the wealthy or more influential people had to say.…
