Monsoon Wedding Character Analysis

The character arc of the bride, Aditi, in Monsoon Wedding is quite interesting. Even though her ultimate goal remains the same, Aditi transforms from the beginning of the film to the end of the film. Her actions illustrate this process. Aditi wants to be married, she wants to settle down with someone even if she does not love him and therefore requested a last minute arranged marriage. This comes about when she realises that there is no certainty that Vikran will divorce his wife to be with her. Actually she knows it will never happen but enjoys the relationship they do have. Internally she does not know what she wants and this is apparent in her actions. The day after the engagement Hemant invites her to a private breakfast. Their conversation highlights the gasp in Aditi’s current psychology. Hament holds Aditi’s hand gently but she pulls away from him creating distance between the two. Another occasion is when the women go shopping for wedding sarees. When they get to the store front, Aditi escapes to get a Popsicle. She gets one but also finds herself in a phone booth hesitant. Feeling guilty about her affair with Vikran, she tells Hament everything. This could potentially mean that he will not marry her pushing her further away from her goal of settling down. As expected, Hament is furious and drives her home but drops her off far from the house. Aditi cries. He watches her walk away for a while, then runs after her. He confesses that he is angry but he appreciates her honesty and he believes that they can make it work. At this point, this is the first time that Aditi willing touches Hament. He places his hand on her face and she melts into it. Accepting Hament and finding peace in the arrangement. Vickran and the affair is no longer a hindrance to Aditi’s goal of settle down. Similary, Aditi is no longer a hindrance to her own goal she knows what she wants now. Hament gives her the option of deciding whether or not they shall get married. Since the film continues with the events of the wedding, we know what decision that is made. At the party before the official wedding ceremony Aditi is seen laughing and talking and holding hands and hugging, Hament. The two run off to be alone where they kiss and enjoy each other.
