The “Monroe’s Motivated Sequence” speech was our fifth speech assignment in COMM R110. For my speech I chose to do How to saving marine life from pollution. I was proud of my introduction because I included shocking facts that surprise the audience and also have good TIA. I also thought it was good that I shared what I was going to teach the audience toward the end of my introduction. The only issue I had with my introduction was that my voice was I should speak up and a bit shaky, but hopefully that will calm down in my last speech. The process was fairly clear, I first explained our current situation with pollution. I used my power point to make sure everyone understood what the effects where on our own health. My delivery was clear

Is it better to live a prosperous life under restrictions or under freedom? Patrick Henry, a knowledgeable and experienced leader of the Patriots, attempts to rally a group of doubtful, wealthy landowners that have given up on fighting for thier independence. He speaks with passion as he attracts white landowners, during the Virginia Convention in 1775, hoping they will fight against the British with him for their freedom to live out prosperous lives just as their ancestors. Just as Judas betrayed Jesus for money, the British betray the colonies for money by taxing the people without their consent or representation in Parliament, which leads to why the colonists feel as if they are tied in chains. As Henry begins his speech, he alludes to…

As exampled in Alexander H. Stephens Cornerstone Speech which he gave on March 21, 1861 to an audience in Savannah, Georgia; the concept of equality between the races was lost to the Southern mind. God, he explained, “had made [African Americans] unequal” and it was the Anti-Slavery fighters of the North who were wrong in their thinking. Furthermore, as portrayed in Thomas Nast’s political cartoon Abraham Lincoln, the very man who embodied this idea of racial equality and the end of slavery, was not well received in the South. In contrast to the almost angelic representation of Lincoln as perceived by the North, his demeanor has taken a complete 360 as he calls for war and steps on his fellow man. It is through these views that the South believed they were fighting the just end of a war, stable and true as the North stood on their “sandy foundation” and backward beliefs.…

Some of my strengths, with respect to the content of the speech as I did my visual presentation, was that I did a good job with the introduction. The introduction involved introducing my topic and grabbing the attention of my audience. Also, I had great supporting materials and most importantly great organization of my main points. As for the delivery aspect of my speech, according to the video, I had a good posture and used my flash cards very well, which were very helpful in delivering my speech.…

In his First Inaugural Address, James Monroe states, “It is only when the people become ignorant and corrupt, when they degenerate into a populace, that they are incapable of exercising their sovereignty.” One might interpret this as positive or negative: either people are at their best as a whole when they are educated and united; or they fail miserably when they become ignorant and corrupt. This is a cup half full versus a cup half empty approach. However, the truth is, the cup has the same amount of water in it either way. The only thing that matters is how long one is forced to hold the cup.…

Through this presentation I learned a lot about Theodore Roosevelt and his conservation efforts. Theodore Roosevelt was passionate about conserving our natural resources, because he knew that one day these resources would be exhausted. So he wanted to preserve these resources for future generations. He saw the need to protect these lands, so generations could see the beauty of the natural lands and its wild life. So Roosevelt dedicated not only his presidency to helping conserve these resources, he dedicated his life.…

What is freedom? Is it being mistreated or doubted for your lack of an education? Is it being kicked to the back of the line because of your skin color or is it being beaten for standing up to what you believe is right. In “The Speech at the March on Washington” by Josephine Baker and “From Letter to Viceroy, Lord Irwin” by Mahatma Gandhi, each article passionately argues about the equality and power of an education along with the mistreatment of those who stand up for what they believe is right. Thus, in order to achieve true freedom one must get past non-violence to find a solution through peaceful protest.…

When Abraham Lincoln first gave one of the most famous speeches in all of American history, he made the first national step that would forever change the lives of Black Americans. More than a century later in todays’ time, we still remember the Emancipation Proclamation which freed all Blacks from the bonds of slavery. The misconception and error that many people are misguided to believe in present day is that the sole reason the Civil War was fought was due to slavery- more specifically, the Emancipation. Although a leading factor, after reading WHAT THEY FOUGHT FOR by James M. McPherson we come across the underlying fact that most Union soldiers who enlisted had not even the faintest thought of freeing black slaves until the middle and/or near end of the war. The Civil War from…

For me the activity of working as a group especially with other individuals who I have not worked with or talked to before was a good learning experience that had both positive and negative outcomes using Driscoll’s model of reflection as a frame work to elaborate on how I interpreted what happened, what impact the situation had on me and what I will do in the future if presented with a similar situation (Driscoll and Teh, 2001). We were required to do a 10 minute presentation for a health promotion project that we developed. I decided to work with other individuals who I didn’t know and have not worked with before as I believed I would be more productive and respectful if I worked with people I didn’t know very well.
