Mononucleosis is a viral disease. A viral disease is when the disease invades people’s normal cells and uses them to grow. The disease will eventually kill all of the normal cells. Mononucleosis is caused by the Epstein Barr Virus, or EBV. The Epstein Barr Virus is a member of the herpes family. Furthermore there are more than 100,000 cases of mono in America yearly. Out of these 100,000 cases most of them occur in teens, young adults, and college students. Males are more likely to get mono than females. The male’s peak period for getting mono is longer than women, and starts at the age of 18. The peak period ends for men around the age of 23. The ages 15-16 are the female’s peak period. Mononucleosis is spread mostly by kissing. As a result mono is sometimes called the kissing disease. Mono can also spread by sharing drinking glasses, toothbrushes, and anything that was or is in contact with a person’s mouth.
When doctors are diagnosing mono they usually get a blood sample. The doctors examine the blood sample for more white blood cells, lymphocytes, than normal. They also look for atypical liver functions. Symptoms will occur 2-7 weeks after exposure to the bacteria. Average symptoms will last 1-3 weeks. The 1st symptoms are usually mistaken for the cold or flu. These symptoms include headaches, tiredness, chills, and puffy itchy eyes. The 2nd symptoms are much more severe than the 1st symptoms. The 2nd symptoms include a severe sore throat, general aches, excessive sweating, sensitivity to bright lights, an enlarged spleen or liver, fever and swollen lymph nodes. The fever is usually 101 to 105 degrees F. After about 5 days the temperature should turn back to normal, but the fever may come on and off for several weeks after.
