We Wish You A Christmas Play Analysis

A Christmas classic performed at the Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis for over forty years, A Christmas Carol wows audiences with its intricate design and special effects. This production was directed by Joe Chvala, adapted from the original Dickens novel by Crispin Whittell. A tradition for many local families, the theatre even lowers its age requirement for this one play so that children of all ages might enjoy the reclamation of Scrooge, a wealthy man whose name has become synonymous with a lack of Christmas cheer. With the exception of the carol singers, no music appears in the original work. This production uses music to great effect, having a group of Londoners gathering outside in the snow to sing chilling traditional Christmas songs at the beginning of both acts. Much time is spent in Fezziwig’s party, fast-paced dance music providing a contrast to the slow deterioration of Scrooge’s love life. The play concludes with an a cappella solo of “We Wish You A Merry Christmas” by Tiny Tim, joined by the remainder of the cast for a hearty conclusion. Such music added Christmassy feel to the play, not underemphasized but most welcome. A Christmas Carol suffers in some areas from too much comic relief and poor acting, but is valiantly rescued through stunning special effects and enchanting music. Overall, it is worth attending this traditional spectacle. If one seeks an extremely accurate or emotionally deep production, however, disappointment can occur. Nonetheless, the magic of the Christmas season descends upon the audience members like the snow falling upon the London street.
