EXT. DOWNTOWN SEATTLE – DAY

A couple walks alongside a busy road, both man and woman looking straight ahead.

The man, THOMAS, is a tall, lanky man. His hair is gelled up and he has generic work clothes on, along with carrying a suitcase in his left hand and a fedora hanging from a finger.

The woman, JACKIE, only a few inches shorter, is skinny with extremely long hair. Sunglass hold her hair from falling onto her face. She is carrying a large book under her right arm.

The book thumps down between their feet, onto the sidewalk. A rugged boot kicks it forward.

A hand reaches down to pick it up, but the boot slams onto the book. After a few seconds of struggle, the book is wrestled out and lifted up.

Thomas stands up.

THOMAS So it was you! You really called the-

JACKIE But I continue to give you opportunities to change. (She looks at him). This is the last one.

Thomas, surprised beyond measure about what he heard, sits back down.

JACKIE I’m pregnant…and yes, it’s yours. Can’t be anyone else’s.

Thomas leans back and puts his hands behind his head. Jackie begins to inaudibly weep and it goes unnoticed to Thomas as she purposely controls it.

Thomas leans up and slaps his knees before standing up. He walks over to the front door and puts his coat back on. Without looking back, he walks out, as he often does when a difficult situation arises.

Jackie begins to cry loudly. She pulls her phone out of her pocket and puts it on the table, before walking out of sight, into the bedroom. Focus goes to the phone.

After a few seconds, it buzzes and the screen lights up.

The name comes into focus first: Mrs. Pamel. The text then comes into focus: Call me soon, dear!

INT. BEDDROOM – AN HOUR LATER – NIGHT

Jackie is sitting on the bed, the phone is buzzing as she is calling someone on speakerphone.

MRS. PAMEL Beautiful! How are you doing?

JACKIE

The stories he uses in this book are mostly fictional, but they tell stories in a different way than how your mind actually puts it. He adds a little more magic in his stories to make them sound believable. It is through Thomas’ stories that make people actually think about what happens on and of the reservation. A look at the three works, thematically we are brought to the realization of the unspoken Native American culture. An unstated theme of these stories could be the plight of the American Indians and their struggles in the past under the European Colonialism and the conflicts therein with the establishment of a better future. In the Shawl, the healing and restoration theme can be translated by the fact that after the excessive trauma suffered by the narrator’s father, he finally accepts to move beyond the trauma of his childhood (Erdrich, 2014).
