W.W. Jacobs Biography and Short Stories Connections In the beginning of “The Monkey’s Paw” a brief description of the night is given while Father and Sammy are playing a little game of chess. They played chess as they waited for their good friend Morris who possessed the monkey’s paw. They had small talk until Father brought up the monkey’s paw, but Morris was very intent to stay away from that subject. The White family was very persistent about getting information about it. So Morris spilled the beans about the paw and quickly tried to throw it away but Father was lighting fast to save the simian paw from its flaming end. Soon after Father persuaded Morris to give Father this “cursed” paw so Morris respected Father’s decision and let him …show more content…
Britannica Biographies 3/1/2012” I could see all numerous connections between both the story and the biography. W.W. Jacobs was primarily known for one great peace of horror “The Monkey’s Paw”. One of the first connections I’ve made was that W.W. Jacobs has a unique “ability to combine everyday life and gentle humor with exotic adventure and dread” in the monkey’s paw Morris was a very adventurous man and Sammy was the gentle humor of the story providing the sarcastic remarks with sayings like “If the tale about the monkey’s paw is not more truthful than others he has been telling us, we sha’nt make much out of it.”(4) Another similarity in both text was that Jacobs was a very hard worker as it in the biography “Snug Herbour containing some 17 volumes of Jacobs work, was published in 1931.” shows how long and hard he works with determination in mind. This relates to Sammy in “The Monkey’s Paw”because Sammy is the only one in the family and takes it seriously because he was the only one in the family to work so he had to take it very serious to …show more content…
In “Pet Cemetery” the Creed family experienced death in the family by the daughter dying then the son died on the “same road(1) ”the daughter died on, after that the wife died soon after by committing suicide in the attic”He warns her not to, but she has already hung up”(2), and shortly after Louis is killed by the wife as soon as the movie ends. In “The Monkey’s Paw” Sammy is killed in as a price for the wish father had made.”Badly hurt, but not in any pain”(5). In “Pet Cemetery” Louis takes his son Gage to the burial ground as it states “Louis digs up Gage’s body taking his son’s corpse to the burial ground. Gage later arrives”(2) In “The Monkey’s Paw” Sammy is brought back to life by one of Father’s wishes.”I wish my child alive again!”(11) Even though Sammy is alive again he is not the same person. Sammy came back evil and very aggressive. “For God sake, Elza! Don’t let it in!”(12) Same goes for “Pet Cemetery” later on in the story Gage comes back but very evil and murderous. “He tells her he brought her something , and shows her Louis’s scalpel. Thinking

Jacobs and Jeff Strand have both made it evident through their portrayal of the White family and Doctor Prethorius that arrogance presented inside the theme of hubris becomes a large, controlling and deadly entity. Mr., Mrs., and Hubert White, shown in “The Monkey’s Paw” had been directly informed by Sergeant-Major Morris of dire consequences that resulted from the past usage of the monkey’s supernatural paw. A regular, seemingly happy and satisfied family gets presented with a magical monkey paw that will grant any wish however, there are consequences that follows the wish. The Sargent has given the White family three warnings against using the paw; “It has caused enough mischief already,” “Better let it burn,” and “but I warn you of the consequences” (Jacobs 14). Hubris is being exemplified when despite multiple forewarnings, the White family wishes for two hundred pounds, showing their arrogance and their feeling of invincibility.…
